University of Wyoming - American Heritage Center Peter Weldon Van Winkle was captain of Company D, 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry between 1862 and 1866. He was born March 9, 1825, near Hillsboro, Ohio, and helped organize the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry in 1861. Most of the men in Company D were residents of Highland County, Ohio. The company was stationed at Fort Laramie and at Plate Bridge Station (later named Fort Caspar near present day Casper). After the company had been at Fort Laramie for a time, Captain Van Winkle's wife, Margaret Kinkead Van Winkle, and two daughters joined him. Margaret and the girls were sent home in 1864 during the Sioux War. Van Winkle suffered a stroke while on duty and was sent home to Hillsboro, Ohio where he died on August 2, 1871. The collection contains muster rolls, returns, and other records of Company D (1862-1866), a photograph of Peter W. Van Winkle (ca. 1860s), and a brief biography of the Van Winkle family by Nellie W. Baum (ca. 1951). The artifacts comprise of a sash, insignia, and an epaulette box of Capt. Van Winkle's and a drawing of Fort Laramie during the time the Van Winkle family lived there. Also included with the collection are a funeral notice for Caspar Collins (1866) and copies of articles by C.O. Collins about his experiences with the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry (1917). Elsie Johnson Ayres, Highland Pioneer Sketches & Family Genealogies, p. 254, mentions only Daniel's sons Lewis and John. A far more reliable source is David N. McBride and Jane N. McBride's Wills, Administrations, Guardianships and Adoptions of Highland County, Ohio (1805-1880), which abstracts the will of father Daniel on p. 75 as follows: "VAN WINKLE, Daniel. Date: Sept. 8, 1858. Wife: Eve. Children: Lewis G., James, William, John, Peter W. [emphasis added], Catharine wife of James Sugart, "my youngest daughter Araminta", Nory Ann wife of Clabourn Burnett, Caroline wife of John Greathouse. Grandchildren: "Lewis C. Greathouse the son of my daughter Caroline". Executors: James, John. Witnesses: David Noble, Thomas Berryman. Proven Nov. 4, 1862 by David Noble and N. Barrere for Thomas Berryman, dec'd. Administration Book, Probate Court, states that James Vanwinkle being now in the Army of the U.S. the court appoints John Vanwinkle Executor. Sureties: M.M. Barrere, Lewis Gibler. Appraisers: David McConnaughey, John Boatman, Oliver Sanders."
