Description	:	A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Gwynn's Island Baptist Church for Captain Rodney D. Callis, 67, of Grimstead, who died on Wednesday, July 26, 1978, in a Richmond hospital after a short illness. Mr. Callis was a retired merchant, and served as a captain in the Merchant Marine during World War II. He was a member of Gwynn's Island Baptist Church. Read More	A funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Gwynn's Island Baptist Church for Captain Rodney D. Callis, 67, of Grimstead, who died on Wednesday, July 26, 1978, in a Richmond hospital after a short illness. Mr. Callis was a retired merchant, and served as a captain in the Merchant Marine during World War II. He was a member of Gwynn's Island Baptist Church. During the war, Captain Callis served with the Bull Line and was later master of a Liberty ship. In an interview with the Gazette-Journal in May 1977, he described his experiences sailing along the Atlantic coast in the early days of the war when German U-boats were taking a heavy toll of Allied shipping. "It was really a nightmare sailing this coast and the Caribbean the summer of '42," he said. "There were so many submarines on the coast that ... it was not unusual to see four or five ships burning or their masts sticking out of the water. Sometimes you'd run through black slicks of oil for five hours." Among other war experiences, he spent a year preparing for the invasion of France. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Virginia Powell Callis; a sister, Mrs. Pauline Skyles of Gwynn; and a brother, Leonard R. Callis of Grimstead. The service was conducted by the Rev. Julian S. Orrell, pastor of the Gwynn's Island church. Burial was in the Gwynn's Island cemetery. Pallbearers were Wade Powell, Grady Powell, Vivian Hope Callis, Kenneth Rowe, Connie Rowe, David Crockett, Everett Darden Brown and Ronnie Mitchem.
