Enlisted July 1, 1861. Mustered July 15, 1861. Wounded in head May 16, 1863, Champion Hills, Miss. Discharged for promotion Aug. 1, 1863, Vicksburg, Miss. Promoted First Lieutenant of Twelfth Louisiana Colored Volunteers. -------------------- Samuel A. Reed was shot between the eyes at Battle of Champion Hill, Ms. Thought to be dead, it was discovered he was yet alive as they prepared to toss him in a burial trench. After the war he was a successful attorney for a number of years until the lead bullet in his head started to take its toll. He was committed to Mt. Pleasant by his wife and died there July 1, 1890, some 27 yrs. after receiving his fatal wound. (Courtesy of John Franklin Horrighs # 48119478) -------------- Based on enlistment in 5th Iowa Infantry, his service included battles of New Madrid & Island # 10, Siege of Corinth, MS (Apr 2-May 30,1862)Battle of Iuka(Sep 19) where regiment won high honors by holding its ground against four times its numbers, making 3 charges with bayonet when all ammunition was exhausted. Out of 480 engaged, the 5th lost 220 killed and wounded. Battle of Corinth (Oct 3-5 62). In 1863, Battle of Champion's Hill, Siege of Vicksburg. ------------- From Civil War Pension Index: Samuel applied for invalid pension May 1 1881. His widow, Lide C Reed, applied for his pension Sep 8 1890 in Iowa.
