[Diary of Joshua Hempstead, of New London] Although Samuel d. intestate, he left an extensive probate record at Wethersfield. On Jan. 2, 1717/8 of record at Wethersfield, Samuel m. his 1st cousin Abigail Goodrich, dau. of Jonathan Goodrich and Abigail Craft, b. Nov. 28, 1694 at Wethersfield. They had five children of record at Wethersfield summarized below. It has troubled the memorialist why the first known child of Capt. Samuel and wife Abigail was not born until four years after their marriage. Now the memorialist knows likely why. In the Essex County, Mass. Notarial Records is a lengthy record dated Salem July 10, 1719 regarding "Mr. Craft Wright master of the sloop Dolphin" concerning a voyage on Feb. 13, 1718/19 in which the loss of the sloop Dolphin and all of its cargo occurred off the east coast of Nova Scotia, "sworn to by Samuel Wright, mate of the said ship." [Essex Institute Historical Collections, 44:325.] Craft Wright was Samuel's brother and in July 1719 only Capt. Samuel Wright of this memorial was the oldest Samuel in the Wright family of Wethersfield who could have been the deponent to the cited record. In Stiles "History of Ancient Wethersfield" is a narrative regarding the community of Rocky Hill, formerly the southern portion the original town of Wethersfield, but now its own separate town: • It would be difficult for the residents of the present Rocky Hill village to realize what a scene of bustling activity old Stepney Landing [the original name of Rocky Hill] presented during the period of its commercial prosperity. There were eight or nine stores about the landing, whose owners werr owners of vessels being built in the adjoining shipyard, or taking in goods, or unloading at the docks. These stores all dealt in so-called West India goods - rum, brandy, wines, sugars, teas, molasses, salt, sea-coal, etc.; and all imported directly. Among their exports were: horses, cattle, hogs, hay, hoop-poles, barrel-staves, salted beef, pork and fish, potatoes, onions, etc. Samuel's brother Craft would marry into the wealthy Calley family of Marblehead, Mass., which was extensively engaged in fishing off the coast of Nova Scotia. Craft purportedly died in 1727. On the other hand, after 1719 Capt. Samuel Craft was part owner of a sloop operating between Connecticut and the West Indies. At his death his estate inventory was valued, clear of debts, at £1,434 and included many items that would have only been acquired in direct trade with the West Indies including gold and silver valued at "Barbados Weight." Prior to July 7, 1741 during the extended probate of Samuel's estate, the widow Abigail m. 2) Noadiah Dickinson, s. of Sgt. Obadiah Dickinson and Mehitable Hinsdale, b. Aug. 2, 1694 at Wethersfield. Noadiah d. intestate June 3, 1745 at Wethersfield also leaving an extended probate record. There were no children of this marriage. The children of Capt. Samuel Wright and Abigail Goodrich recorded at Wethersfield are: • i. Samuel Wright, 4th, b. May 28, 1722, d. Oct. 7, 1788 at Lenox, Mass., Æ 67 (g.s.); m. 1) and unidentified Mary and 2) and unidentified Mehitable. Thirteen children of the marriages, 9 by Mary and 4 by Mehitable. • ii. Abigail Wright, b. Mar. 11, 1724/5, d. Nov. 7, 1755 at Wethersfield, Æ 31 (g.s.); m. by late 1744 as his 1st wife, Ezekiel Fosdick, s. of Samuel Fosdick, Jr. and Susanna Turner, b. Feb. 17 (also bapt. Feb. 17) 1719/20 at Charlestown, Mass. Four children of the marriage. • iii. Rebecca Wright, b. Sept. 7, 1726, never married and d. May 13, 1813 at Lenox, Mass., age 86 (g.s.) • iv. Lucy Wright, b. Jan. 26, 1728/9, d. in Jan. 1809 at Shoreham, VT; m. Mar. 29, 1750 [Weths. Ch. Rec.] at Wethersfield, Samuel Wolcott, Jr., s. Samuel Wolcott and Mercy Fosdick, latter the sister of Ezekiel the husb. of Lucy's sister Abigail. Samuel Wolcott purportedly d. at Vermont in 1786. Four known children of the family. • v. Dea. Moses Wright, b. July 3, 1731, d. Dec. 20, 1822 at Colebrook, Conn., Æ 90 (g.s.); m. Oct. 14, 1760 at Suffield, Conn., Thankful Norton, d. of Nathaniel Morton and Mary Bartlett, b. July 14, 1742 at Suffield. She d. Aug. 18, 1821 at Colebrook, Æ 79 (g.s.) Twelve children of the family. Expanded 1/23/2019
