Dow died at New Hampton, N.H. on Friday, the 17th, quite suddenly of malignant sore throat…The funeral took place from his late residence, at New Hampton, on Sunday the 19th and was quite largely attended. Among those present was the Bristow Lodge of Freemasons, of which the deceased was a member, the services being conducted by two clergymen who were members of the same lodge. Capt. Dow was one of the most successful shipmasters that ever sailed from New England, the owners of vessels entrusted to his care never having had occasion to draw a dollar’s worth of insurance upon his account. He was born on the 7th of January 1819, at Plymouth, N.H., from which place his parents moved to Salem, Mass., while he was an infant. At the age of 13 he went to sea for the first time in the old ship Francis, owned by Capt. Joseph Peabody, of Salem, his first voyage being to the coast of Sumatra. When he was 19 years of age he was appointed mate, and at age 25 was appointed master of a Salem vessel. Drying the most part of the last twenty-seven years Capt. Dow was engaged in the East Coast of Africa trade. At the breaking out of the California fever he went to that country and followed mining for about 2 years, and in leaving that place for home was followed for three days by an Indian, and finally made his escape from him by rigging up an effigy of himself and placing his cap upon it. The savage pierced the cap with an arrow, and as soon as the Captain ascertained his whereabouts, he drew a bead upon him, and put a bullet through his body. After his return, he took a Providence vessel and again went to the African coast. During the rebellion, he was spoken by the [Confederate raider] Shenandoah and escaped from her by strategy. When the Shenandoah appeared, he distributed his crew around the deck and set them all to smoking pipers. To the hail of the pirated he hoisted the Dutch flag, responded in Dutch, and mistaking him for a Dutchman the pirate bore away and left him, the Captain thus saving his vessel and a valuable cargo. As stated above, Capt. Dow never lost a vessel or cargo. He was a man of strict integrity, the owner of vessels placing implicit confidence in him and commissioning him generally as supercargo as well as master. He was accustomed to take an assorted cargo from here to England, sell it, purchase another for India, dispose of that, and then lay in another for the home trade. Capt. Dow leaves a wife and five children, who will receive the sympathy of a very large circle of friends in their affliction. The deceased was a brother of constable D.M.E.
