D. 1790, in what was at that time a portion of Freetown plantation afterwards Fairfax; but now China Village. When he was six weeks old his parents moved onto the farm two mile down the lake, which place is well known as War's Corner, where the subject of this sketch has continued to reside until his….. trade he was a mason, but in his early years was engaged in the winter season in lumbering operations. Being an expert "er" he spent twenty-two winters in succession in the logging camp hauling lumber. He had worked at his trade in several of the counties but never was out of the State. The latter portion of his life was spent in the cultivation of his farm. He was a soldier in the war of 1812, but not a pensioner. He ….. his mental and physical faculties in an unusual degree, with the exception of his hearing, which became somewhat impaired. He was the last survivor of his father's family, consisting of eleven children. He married Deborah Doe, a native of Sidney, Me, with whom he lived nearly forty-four years. His wife was also the last survivor of her parent's family, of ten children. Her death preceded that of her husband's one week. Mr. Ward's last illness was but a few days. In his last hours he remarked that his heart's desire had been to live to smooth the pillow of his beloved companion who had been nearly blind for a number of years. His prayer having been answered he was ready to depart. They had been members of the Baptist church for some fifty years. Rev. Mr. Nelson officiated at his funeral, who remarks on the occasion were very impressive. China, Feb. 12, 1875.
