Walter Gardiner Lane, aged 75 years, died at his home at Mathews, Va., Monday, May 11, at 4 p.m. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Willie Kirwan Lane. Capt. Lane was a member of one of the county's oldest and most highly respected families. He was a son of the late Walter G. Lane and Mrs. Virginia Billups Lane. When a young man, after attending Virginia Military Institute, he went to sea and later found employment with the Old Bay Line. For many years he was master of one of this line's passenger steamers on the run between Baltimore and Norfolk. He retired a few years ago and came to Mathews, his native County, to reside. Capt. Lane was twice married. His first wife was before her marriage, Miss Ruby Garnett, of this County. He was an active member of Westville Christian Church. Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday at 3 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Henry G. Lane, of Richmond. Interment was made in Christ Church Cemetery. The active pallbearers were: Capt. L. P. Freeman, Capt. Clarence Kirwan, Dr. C. B. Ransone, Melvin T. Thurston, Clyde Fox, and Col. J. E. Healy. ~~~~~~~~~~~ The Mathews Journal, Thurs, 21 May 1936, p1, c7 Walter Gardiner Lane I would indeed be lacking in respect and devotion were I to stand and see the grave closed over the body of Walter Gardiner Lane without in a modest way laying this wreath upon his grave. For ten years it was my pleasure to be not only a shipmate but a companion to him, and being continually in his presence both day and night, I had the opportunity to judge and know him as he was. No commander of a ship was ever more cordial to and considerate of his officers and crew than he. In his command he was always mild and with due consideration for the feelings of the one he was addressing. He did not know how to be harsh but was always respectful to his subordinates and for these thraits he won the love, respect and admiration of his officers and crew. The officials of the company for whom he gave so many faithful years of service, were likewise devoted to and admired him. To me his passing away is a personal loss. Being so closely identified with him on shipboard we had welded together a friendship of such deep devotion that it cannot be broken by death. Dear shipmate - my lips refuse to bid you a last farewell. We have so long been joined together in common aims and interest, so often mingled our thoughts in confidential friendship, so often planned and worked together that it renders asunder the very tissues of my heart to say farewell. But this long and happy association is ended. We have esteemed each other, loved each other, and now from each other part. God grant that I may so live as to meet you in the better world where parting is unknown. And as I took one last long lingering look at your familiar face, I know that - "In the long way that I must tread alone, your loving hand shall lead my steps aright." Because the poet says - Thy day has come, not gone: Thy sun has risen, not set; Thy life is now beyond The reach of death or change, Not ended - but begun, O, noble soul; O gentle heart, Hail, and farewell." ~ Melvin T.
