Description	:	Orlando W Keyes enlisted from Holderness, now Ashland, in Company E Twelfth New Hampshire Regiment in 1862. He was immediately chosen and commissioned first lieutenant, and early in 1863 he was promoted to be captain of Company D same Regiment. He was shot dead at Chancellorsville, Sunday morning May 3 at 5, o'clock. His only brother, Henry, sergeant of Company E, lost his right arm in the same battle. They were sons of Jonathan F Keyes, Esq, of Ashland, and were brothers of Mrs Thomas P Cheney. Captain Keyes was a very enterprising young man and had made in paper manufacturing a comfortable fortune for one so young, being only 31 years old when he died. He was worshipful master of Mount Prospect Lodge, F & A M, at Ashland at the time of his death. His body lay upon the battlefield for two weeks after the fight and was buried by a detail of Union soldiers who went to the place under a flag of truce for the purpose of burying the union dead. On Christmas Day 1865 his body was taken up by Colonel T P Cheney and brought home. He was finally buried from the Episcopal Church in Ashland with Masonic honors. His body lies in green Grove Cemetery and his grave is marked by a marble shaft. He was married before entering the army and his wife died before his enlistment. [Concord Monitor] The Ashland Item, May 27, 1893, p5. This officer was born in Hancock, now Bennington, April 5, 1832 and is the son of Jonathan F and Mary (Woods) Keyes. He was the oldest of a family of ten children, three boys and seven girls. His great-grandfather, Abner Keyes went through the Revolution and his grandfather enlisted in the War of 1812, but was never called out. He was in the Battle of Fredericksburg and was killed on the field of the next battle, Chancellorsville. When the fatal ball struck him, he was in the act of cheering his men forward by swinging his sword above his head. He had previously been wounded near the brook buy a ball striking him in the calf of his leg, which was sufficiently serious for him to leave the field of action. But he firmly refused to do what he honorably might, being made of different temper. His brother, Henry F was a member of the same company, and wounded severely in the same battle causing his death two years later. Captain Keyes was married to Sarah L Ellis of Plymouth, who died before the war and had one child who died in infancy. He is remembered as one of the most competent and energetic officers of the regiment, and his death was a great loss to the service as well as to his relatives and friends.
