Description	:	On Friday January 4, 2019, Carey Jay Corder went to live in his heavenly home with his Lord Jesus. Carey was born in Washington, D.C. on 23 November 1933. He then began a... Read More	On Friday January 4, 2019, Carey Jay Corder went to live in his heavenly home with his Lord Jesus. Carey was born in Washington, D.C. on 23 November 1933. He was the son of William E. and Irene Wood Corder. Carey grew up in Haymarket and Manassas, Virginia and remained in the area his entire life. Carey served three years in the U. S. Army with service in Germany. On his return from Germany, he married Mary Alice Dodd, and they moved to Lynchburg, Virginia where he studied and graduated from Lynchburg College in 1961. He then began a twenty-five year teaching career in several Prince William County elementary schools and was given The Outstanding Teachers of America award. He became a member of Manassas Baptist Church in 1952 and has served in several areas since that time. He researched and wrote an up-dated church history covering the years from 1983 through 2009, and another about the renovations at the former Marsteller Middle School when the church made that purchase. Carey’s interests included writing fiction, artistic painting, and playing near-par golf. He completed two courses in writing from the Writers Digest School, and a painting course from The Washington School of Art. He loved his family and was so happy to live to see five great grandchildren added to the group. He was a man with a smile and a friendly greeting for everyone. Some said he was a “gentle giant” in his 6'4" frame. Carey was preceded in death by his parents, William and Irene Corder; two brothers, William Lee and Brice Wood Corder; and one son, Stephen A. Corder. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Mary Alice Corder, and two children and their spouses: Wende Corder Gonzalez and Steven Varholy; Dwayne Corder and wife, Tammie; and daughter-in-law, Vicki Saphonchak Corder. He also leaves nine grandchildren: Sarah, Daniel, Scott, Greg, Kathleen, Jennifer, Emily, Anna, and Connor, and five great-grandchildren, Asher, Silas, Finn, Lilah, and Vivianne, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Manassas Baptist Church on Thursday, January 10 at 11:00 a.m. with a time of visitation at 10:00 a.m. Internment will be at the Cedar Grove Cemetery in Bealeton, Virginia at 2:30 p.m.
