Carl A. Dunshee, 84, was born January 1, 1924 in Chariton, IA and departed this life on Sunday, May 4, 2008 following a brief illness with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Madrid. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.

Carl A. Dunshee, 84, was born January 1, 1924 in Chariton, IA and departed this life on Sunday, May 4, 2008 following a brief illness with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Madrid. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid.
He was the son of Lillie Florence (McCollough) and Frank Dunshee. He was baptized and confirmed in the First Presbyterian Church of Chariton and graduated from high school there in 1941. Carl worked in the family business until March 1943 when he entered the US Army. He served in the European Theater earning five Battle Stars including the Battle of the Bulge and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 and returned to Iowa to attend Simpson College where he was a member and president of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Upon graduation he worked for Iowa Electric Light & Power in DeWitt, Guthrie Center and Madrid where he retired after 34 years. In 1953 he married Mildred Marie Westphal. Their marriage was blessed with two children, Richard and Janis.
Carl enjoyed fishing, gardening, local sports events and attending to his neighbors' various needs. He was a member of the Guthrie Center and Madrid Fire Departments as well as the Lion's Club and VFW. He served on the Madrid Senior Housing Board, Madrid Trees Forever and was a volunteer at the Iowa Gold Star Military Museum, where he earned the Governor's Award and the Commander's Award for Public Service for his efforts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Glen, Richard and William; and sister, Marion. Carl is survived by his children, Rick (Cindy) and Janis (Dan) Letourneau; four grandsons, Chris & Chad Dunshee and Nick & Matt Letourneau; four sisters, Martha, Maxine, Barbara, and Frances; and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ or the Israel Family Hospice House. |
