Read More	Carl Abbas Dies in Bridge Crash; James Mennenga Escapes A shocked and saddened Plainfield - Horton community paid last respects at 2 p.m. Tuesday to Carl Alan Abbas, 19, who met instant death in a head-on collision about 3 a.m. Saturday with a concrete bridge abutment west of Horton. A companion, James Mennenga, was thrown out of the borrowed Chevrolet Impala Abbas was driving and was unconscious for a time. When he came to, he walked into the nearby Allen Freerks home and called for help. Mennenga suffered frozen feet, but no other major injuries. He was taken to the Waverly hospital for examination and treatment, but came home over the weekend. The car was totaled, a misshapen hulk of metal and glass. It evidently hit the bridge at extremely high speed. Reports around Plainfield Monday were that the bridge had been moved three inches. Abbas and Mennenga were heading west on Highway 188 at the time, Abbas taking his longtime friend back to Plainfield to pick up his car. Both live in the Horton vicinity. Ironically, Abbas wrecked his own car less than two weeks ago in a one-vehicle collision with the same bridge. Services were held for Abbas at St. John Lutheran church in West Douglas, Pastor Lynn Groe officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Music was by Mrs. Lyle Banser, vocalist, and Mrs. Charles L. Dietz, organist. Pallbearers were Curtis Hansen, Jeff Meyer, Dennis and Steve Franzen, Mike Scheidecker and Steve Klunder. Both Abbas and Mennenga were 1975 graduates of Plainfield high school, where Abbas was an outstanding football player and wrestler. His survivors include his parents, Mr. Mrs. Duane Abbas of north of Horton, former Nashua residents; and three sisters, Christi, Carol and Candace, all at home; also, his maternal grandparents, the Elmer Hassmans of New Hampton; paternal grandparents, Mr. Mrs. Carl Abbas of Frederika, and a maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Martha Maier of Barnesville, Mn. Both Carl and Jim worked in Plainfield, Carl at the Moorman plant and James for his uncle, Don, in the filling station.
