Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Carl Arthur Otto Eucker was born on October 26, 1918, to Otto and Louisa (Born) Eucker in Lindsay, Nebraska. He was baptized on December 1, 1918, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near St. Bernard, Nebraska and later confirmed there when he was 12 years old. He attended St. Paul’s Parochial School and graduated from the eighth grade. When Carl was 16, he went with Harold Eucker and several other young men in a Model A car to Iowa, where they shucked grain. They then traveled to Minnesota to shuck grain and joined a thrashing crew. The second year he hitchhiked to Minnesota in order to work the thrashing crew. When he returned to Norfolk, he purchased a 1927 Chevy for $55. Carl worked several summers and even picked corn in the fall in this manner, also working one of those years in the Dakota’s. Carl was a Parachute Rigger 620 in the United States Army Airforce. He was inducted on December 29, 1941. His tour of duty included the Southern Philippines, East Indies, Papuan, New Guinea, Bismark, Archipelago and the Western Pacific. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with six Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Ribbon and a Distinguished Unit Citation. His continental service was for nine months, seven days and his foreign service was for two years, eleven months, and two days. He was honorably discharged on September 15, 1945. Carl married Elaine Elenore Claus on August 26, 1946. They began farming east of Newman Grove and during their seven years on this farm, Connie and Carmen were born. When Carmen was three in March of 1954, they moved to a farm five miles west of Newman Grove. It was during their time on this farm that they were blessed with another daughter, Chawna. They ran a dairy operation until 1963 and made countless improvements on the farm over the years. In 1963, they earned the Boone County Conservation Award for soil and water conservation. While farming, Carl began selling NC+ seed. As of 1990, he was a NC+ salesman for 25 years and won numerous awards. In 1975, Carl and Elaine moved into Albion. Carl worked with Carmen as a partner in farming until 1980 when he retired. Carl and Elaine were known as caring neighbors while they farmed west of Newman Grove. This caring attitude carried over when they moved to Albion. On May 11, 1978, they received Aksarben’s Good Neighbor Award. Carl and Elaine taught Sunday school at Trinity Lutheran Church in Newman Grove for many years. Carl and Elaine’s Christian teachings have touched more than the lives of their children; they have also influenced their in-laws, grandchildren, Sunday school students and all who have known them. Carl is survived by his wife: Elaine Eucker of Albion, NE; three children: Connie Vitek of Fremont, NE; Carmen (Vivian) Eucker of Albion, NE; Chawna Dodendorf of Lincoln, NE; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; eight sisters: Alvina (Fred) Borgelt; Martha (in infancy); Dorothy (Carl) Steuck; Helen (Victor) Flesner; Leota (Art) Wedekind; LaVerna (Gilbert) Freudenburg; baby (still born); Marjorie (Harold) Schulz; two brothers: Kenneth (in youth) and Donald (Dorothy) Eucker; and one son-in-law: Edward Vitek.
