Description	:	Carl C. Mathis, 92, of Girard, passed away at 3:08 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013 at the Girard Medical Center. He was born April 5, 1920 at Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of Charlie B. and Rachel (McGiffin) Mathis. On September 5, 1939, he was united in marriage to Daisy L. Million at Lamar, Missouri. She preceded him in death on January 5, 2010. In July 1943 during World War II, Mr. Mathis enlisted in the United States Navy. Mathis, 92, of Girard, passed away at 3:08 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013 at the Girard Medical Center. He was born April 5, 1920 at Tulsa, Oklahoma, the son of Charlie B. and Rachel (McGiffin) Mathis. On September 5, 1939, he was united in marriage to Daisy L. Million at Lamar, Missouri. She preceded him in death on January 5, 2010. In July 1943 during World War II, Mr. Mathis enlisted in the United States Navy. He served until the war was over and he was honorably discharged in December 1945. Mr. Mathis then resumed studies at the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Pharmacy. After graduation, he worked in Wichita, Kansas and in 1952 bought a farm outside of Girard. Carl worked at various pharmacies throughout the area and farmed. In 1965, they bought the Davis Drug Store on the West side of the square in Girard and changed the name to Carl's Drugs. That store is now Mathis Drug Store and is owned by Glen and Karen Mathis. He attended Girard Bible Church in Girard. Carl taught Sunday school and led Bible studies for many years. He is a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Masonic Lodge of Girard. He also served on the Girard School Board for 18 years. The last 30 years Carl and Daisy spent their winters in Florida. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and playing shuffleboard. Survivors include three sons, A. Kelly Mathis and his wife, Carolyn of McPherson, KS, Glen Mathis and his wife, Karen of Girard, and Gene Mathis and his wife, Bobbie of Granby, MO; two daughters, Carllyn Abramo and her husband, John of Clearwater, FL and Marilyn Jones of Mc Kinney, TX; and seventeen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and wife. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday (Feb. 1) at the Brenner Mortuary with Rev. Don Wymore officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery with military honors given by the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday (Feb. 1) at the Brenner Mortuary, where friends may also call from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday. The family suggests memorials to the Girard Bible Church. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Friends may also leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.
