Description	:	Carl (Karl) Deutscher was born in Tereblestie, Sereth District, Bukovina, Austria. He married Carolina (Karolina) Massier in Radautz, Bukowina, Austria on November 16, 1880. This union produced 16 children: Karl, Jacob, Johann, Wilhelm, Amalia, Gustav Adolph, Wilhelm Adam, Ludwig, Emil, Emma Regina, Ludmilla Agathe Karolina, Karl Wilhelm, Hermine, Melanie, Reinhold and Henrietta. He married Carolina (Karolina) Massier in Radautz, Bukowina, Austria on November 16, 1880. This union produced 16 children: Karl, Jacob, Johann, Wilhelm, Amalia, Gustav Adolph, Wilhelm Adam, Ludwig, Emil, Emma Regina, Ludmilla Agathe Karolina, Karl Wilhelm, Hermine, Melanie, Reinhold and Henrietta. Six of these children died before age 8. Karl was Bergomeister of Tereblestie - roughly a town mayor. He had close friends who had moved to Ellis, Kansas whom he visited in 1900. He decided to bring his family to the United States to keep his oldest surviving sons, Jacob and Johann (John) from going to military service under Kaiser Wilhelm. Ironically, Gustav ended up serving in the U.S. Army fighting in WWI against his former countrymen. In 1902, Karl and Karolina, and their 10 of 14 surviving children, left Bremen, Germany on the ship Kaiser Wilhelm de Grosse. Karolina was pregnant at the time of their immigration. They sailed 2 weeks landing in New York and continued their journey to Ellis, Kansas. Baby Melanie died in Ellis shortly after arriving in Ellis. Their 15th child, Reinhold, was born a few months after arriving in their new country. Their daughter, Emma Deutscher Schoenthaler, was 7 years old at the time of the trip. She recalled that her mother baked and canned before the trip to take food on the ship. She also remembered looking up and seeing people with nice dresses walking around on the upper deck. They were traveling in second class cabins. She also remembered her mother crying on the boat because of the family and home that they left behind. Karl was listed as having $4,000 at the time of his arrival in the United States. This was a considerable amount of money at that time. Sadly, Karl died just two years after immigrating to the United States leaving behind his wife, Karolina, and a very large family.
