Born July 7, 1930, in Davie County, Mr. Chappell was the son of the late George Wilson Chappell and Ina Canup Chappell. He graduated from Cooleemee High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Mr. Chappell served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948-1952 and then retired from Duke Power Buck Steam Station after 37 years of service. He enjoyed fishing, was a Tarheel fan, enjoyed spending time with his family and was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marie Poplin Chappell; sons Shawn E. Chappell of Salisbury and Kevin D. Chappell and wife (Andrea) of Spartanburg, S.C.; grandsons David Chappell of Salisbury, Garrett and Grant Chappell of Spartanburg, S.C.; one brother, Conrad Chappell of Cooleemee; one sister, Mildred Turner of Durham; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: The family will see friends on Friday, December 7, from 11-12 p.m. at Summersett Funeral Home. Service: Funeral services will follow at 12 noon at Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Snipes, Minister of Resurrection Life Church, officiating. Interment will be at the U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard location, with Military Honors by the Rowan County Military Honor Guard. Memorials: Memorials can be made to Central United Methodist Church, 200 Fourth St., Spencer, NC 28159. Summersett Funeral Home is assisting the Chappell Family. The family would like to thank Dr. Carville Tolson, Rowan Regional Medical Center doctors, nurses and the Intensive Care Unit staff for the care and loving kindness expressed during Mr. Chappell's illness. A special thanks to all who have lifted their family up in prayer.
