Carl Eugene"Gene"Olson was born August 8, 1924 at Bijou Hills, SD to Carl J. and Alice M. (Smith) Olson. He attended the Cleveland Township Country School and two years at Pukwana High School. He then began working with his parents on the family farm near Pukwana. On November 15, 1953, Gene was united in marriage to Alice L. Arhart at the Storla Lutheran Church in Storla, SD. In 1969, Gene and Alice started the Old West Museum in Oacoma.Gene was an Officer for the Brule Township Weed Board, Officer for the Chamberlain Saddle Club, and also and Trustee at the Zion Lutheran Church. He loved to collect antiques and did so for many years. Gene had a good eye for finding rare and very interesting items. In 1997, Gene began selling out items at the Old West Museum after about 30 years of operating as a museum. He played baseball on teams in Pukwana and Chamberlain and enjoyed playing pitch with his friends in Pukwana. He also enjoyed watching Minnesota Vikings and Minnesota Twins games. He was one of the founders the Longhorn Sale along with Robert and Frank Sharping. He always enjoyed having a cup of coffee in the mornings with his friends. Gene also wrote a book called "Around Chamberlain" which featured postcards he had collected of area communities.Gene passed away on February 25, 2015 at the Aurora Brule Nursing Home in White Lake, SD at the age of 90 years. Preceding him in death were his parents Carl J. and Alice; an infant son; three brothers Wilbur, Duane, Robert; and two sisters Darlene Dozark and Shirley Schmidt.
