On September 19, 1954, he married the love of his life Beverly Pond at First Lutheran Church, Wiota, Iowa. They were married for 53 years. The couple resided in Omaha most of their married life. Carl was an avid Nebraska sports fan and actively followed the Cornhuskers football and volleyball programs. He watched the Nebraska VS Iowa football game just a few days before his passing.
