He attended school near Appleton. In 1917 Carl and his brother, August, came to North Dakota and worked as farmhands in the Hannover area. On March 5, 1920, Carl married Anna Nelisine Rabe at Bismarck. Anna was one of seven children born to William and Elenora (Stege) Rabe. Anna Nelisine Rabe was born November 29, 1896, at her parent's farm south west of Hannover. Anna was the third Rabe girl to marry one of the Schulte boys. Carl and Anna's attendants at their wedding were Ella Rabe and August Schulte. They bought a half section of land from E. F. Mutchler, located 3 1/2 miles north of Center. Here they made their first home in a granary. An old shed provided shelter for their seven cows and five horses. A cluck and a setting of eggs started them in their life time of raising chickens. Later years, six week old chicks were purchased from the hatchery. There was no well for water; therefore, all the water was hauled in barrels on a wagon from the Bubel spring one mile south of the farm. Rain water and melted snow helped furnish the water supply for the house for washing clothes and for the Saturday night baths. The fall of 1920, they dug a cellar and built two rooms on to the granary for a modern and comfortable three room house. Three children were born to Carl and Anna on this farm. Their first baby boy named William died shortly after birth. On May 30, 1923, Gordon William was born and on June 10, 1925, Delores Elenora, was born. Both Gordon and Delores were baptized in Center. In March 1925, Anna's mother died and her father asked Carl to come and live with him. So Carl and Anna rented his farm to Bubel's and they and their two children moved to the Rabe homestead near Hannover for the next five years. Here three more children blessed their household. On January 4, 1927, twins, Dorene Anna and Delmer Carl joined the family. Many sleepless nights, many nights of walking the floor, and many prayers over their fragile, small, blue bodies were blessed when Dr. Gaebe finally found a formula that would agree with them. They were baptized shortly after birth by Reverend Wohfeil at the home. Walter Robert joined the household on March 17, 1929. Carl received 12 bushels of wheat from the farm he rented. Drought and very poor crops were felt by most farmers in the midwest during these years. In the fall of 1929, Carl and Anna returned to their farm north of Center. Here Ellen Ione was born on January 3, 1930; Kenneth Albert on August 7, 1931; and Ervin Darrel on October 18, 1932. These years of drought and depression were very hard. Fires, not enough food for the family or farm animals, insufficient supply of water, grasshoppers, storms, and very little money, gave great dismay to Carl and Anna during the 30s. Price of wheat was $.23 a bushel and cattle were $.08 a pound. In 1936 Carl bought his first John Deere Model D tractor for $325.00. Carl worked with August Mantz digging wells during the 30s and 40s to help feed the family and pay expenses. He also moved buildings in the area. From 1935 to 1937 Carl worked as hail adjuster and was also a carpenter. In 1940 a final attempt was made for water and was successful on top of the hill at 240 feet. A windmill was erected and in 1948 the water was piped to the house. In 1940 Carl brought a large house for $150.00 near Sanger and moved it to the farm. It took time but the large house was enjoyed by all, as the boys and girls finally had their own rooms. In 1945 a large barn was built into the hillside. Sleighing, fox and goose and ice skating provided much fun for the children. Dad made a toboggan long enough for all eight children. Many hours were spent with it. Carl retired in 1959 and Gordon the oldest son, took over the farm. In 1947 REA brought electricity to the farm. This did away with the candles and old kerosene lamps with which the children did there homework. Carl died December 15, 1979.
