Heart disease and complications are given as the cause of death. He had been in failing health for more than a year but only the last six months was he forced to remain in bed. Heart disease and complications are given as the cause of death. He had been in failing health for more than a year but only the last six months was he forced to remain in bed. At intermittent periods he had shown slight improvement and was able to be up and about town in his car. About two weeks ago his condition grew worse and all that medical aid could do for him was of no avail. Funeral services were held at the Salem Lutheran church yesterday with hundreds of people from over a wide territory gathered to pay respects to the departed one. Floral offerings were numerous and bespoke the esteem in which Mr. Hovland was held by his associates. Thirty fellow butter makers, mem¬bers of an association to which Mr. Hovland belonged, attended in a body. Burial was made in the Winnebago Lutheran cemetery south of Lake Mills. Coming to Lake Mills twenty years ago, 1912, Mr. Hovland had been engaged continuously since that time as buttermaker for the Lake Mills Creamery company. During that time he built up the product of the local factory until it ranked with the best in the state. Definite acknowledgment of this came when the Lake Mills creamery was allowed to used the Iowa State Brand trademark on its containers. Taking keen interest in the state association of buttermakers as well as in a national association, he frequently entered contests and was successful in winning many prizes for the quality of butter he had manufactured. To his patrons Mr. Hovland was known as a friend, who was always willing to co-operate with them. He worked untiringly for their interests. Loyal as well to his officers, Mr. Hovland helped them to manage the business economically, as well as efficiently. Three sons; Gerhart, Helmer and Carlyle, were trained as buttermakers under their father. The first two now hold responsible positions, Gerhart at Thompson and Helmer at Vinje Carlyle has been assistant to his 'father and during his extended illness has ably carried on the work at the creamery, assisted by Milo Bakke. At the time of his death Mr. Hovland was also a member of the board of education of the Lake Mills Independent School district. His associates on the board look upon his death as a distinct loss to the community. In spite of all the good things that could be said of Mr. Hovland and his everyday work, he was above all a Christian man, Serving his eighth year as a deacon in the Salem Lutheran church and having a long record as a Sunday school teacher, he found great interest in church work. When death called, he accepted it as a privilege to go home to his Savior. Kind and generous in all that he did, his outstanding characteristic was his radiant Christian spirit.
