Burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery, Guss, Ia. Mr. Brand died August 28, 1987. Carl Gailen Brand, son of Sam and Maude Brand, was born on November 15, 1913 at Gravity, Ia. At an early age, after his father's death, he moved to St. Paul, Ne. with his mother and two sisters, Beulah and Irene. In 1924 his mother came back to the Gravity area for a visit and met and married Elmer Dutton, a wonderful man with two daughters, Letha and Ruth. Carl finished grade school at the Spread Eagle School, northeast of Gravity and high school in Gravity. He also had one year of college at Northwest Teacher's College in Maryville, Mo. In 1938 he married Verlene Firkins of the Guss area. To this union were born eight children, Donna, Helen, Beverly, Carolyn, Kenneth, Opal, John and Betty. Carl continued to farm until 1948. At that time he started bridge construction. In 1951 he moved his family to a farm west of Sharpsburg, later moving to their present home. Accidents forced Carl to retire from bridge building in 1966. In his retirement he served several terms as councilman and mayor for the town of Sharpsburg, Carl was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Beulah Houston of Hopkins, one granddaughter, Pretty Brand of Plano, Tx., and one son-in-law, Jack Cribbs of Sharpsburg. He is survived by his wife Verlene, one sister, Irene and her husband George Wyant of Cook, Wa.; one brother-in-law John Houston of Hopkins, Mo.; eight children, Donna and Terry James of Corning, Ia.; Helen and Gary Mains of Huxley, Ia.; Beverly Bender of Chester, S.C.; Carolyn and Bill Scott of Randolph, Ia.; Kenneth and June Brand of Gainsville, Ga.; Opal and Bob Saddoris of Oquaka, Il.; John and Linda Brand of Whitewright, Tx.; Betty and Dennis Caryl of Topeka, Ks.; 23 grandchildren; five great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews and a great many friends.
