Among this number was the late C. G. Peterson, who long lived near Puyallup, where he was actively engaged in fruit farming. Mr. Peterson was born in Sweden on the 8th of January, 1853, and was a son of Ole and Louise Olsen, both of whom died in their native land. They were the parents of four children, John, C. G., August and Emma. C. G. Peterson was eductaed in the public schools of his native land and at the age of twenty years went to sea, during the ensuing fourteen years sailing to all parts of the world. He was shipwrecked on an island in the South seas, and he and his companions remained three months, living on fish and hardtack, which they saved. Eventually they constructed boats, in which they put to sea, in the hope of being picked up, and they were so fortunate as to be rescued by an English trading vessel on which they were taken to Honolulu. There Mr. Peterson remained three and a half hears, and, being a ship carpenter by trade, he found employment in the shipyards. In 1889 he came to Seattle, Washington, and soon afterwards to Tacoma. He obtained employment as a carpente, working on the construction of the old Tacoma Hotel, and followed that vocation for several years. He then became a millwright at Hanson's Mill, Tacoma, where he remained five or six years, after which for several years he worked in the shipyards of Crawford and Haskell. He next engaged in the building and contracting business, and also made boats and launches for a few years. In November, 1905, Mr. Peterson bought twenty-two acres of land on the Indian reservation, two miles northwest of Puyallup, the tract being covered with timber and brush. He first built a good house and then entered upon the task of cleaning the land, which eventually was practically all cleared, a few acres being planned to fruit trees and five acres to berries. He made many other substantial improvements on the farm, which is now one of the best fruit farms in the valley. He devoted himself closely to his own affaris, exercised good judgement in all of his operations and enjoyed well earned success, living here up to the time of his death, which occurred February 12, 1921. On January 28, 1892, Mr. Peterson was united in marriage to Miss Christina Albertina Anderson, who was born in Sweden, a daughter of Anders and Christina (Gustafson) Anderson. Her father came to the United States in 1882, the other members of the family arriving October 19, 1887. THe father first located in Kansas, where he remained about a year, coming then to Tacoma, Washington. For several years he was employed in sawmills, and then bought a farm from Ezra Meeker near Auburn, which he later sold, thereafter living in Tacoma until his death, which occurred July 8, 1901. The mother survived him a number of years, passing away August 12, 1919. They were the parents of three children, namely Leonard, who lives in Old Town; Christina, Mrs. Peterson: and Gustav, who died February 10, 1915. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson became the parents of six children, as follows: Mrs. Jennie C. McRae, who lives in South Tacoma: Carl Albert, who is married and has daughter, Betty Elaine, born May 24, 1924, and a son Marvin Allen, born February 6, 1926: and Lillie, Elmer L., Alvin and Evelyn M., who are at home, Alvin attending high school. Mrs. Peterson and the younger children are carrying on the farm operations and are raising fine crops of fruit. Mr. Peterson was a member of the Tacoma Lodge, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was a fine citizen, and his sterling qualities were praised and admired.
