Description	:	Carl Morken Jr. passed away at the Avow Hospice House in Naples, Florida November 29, 2020. Carl was born January 9, 1930 to Carl and Anna (Tangen) Morken in Pekin, North Dakota. The family moved to Grand Forks in 1936. Carl attended schools in Grand Forks graduating from Central High School in 1948. He attended the University of North Dakota majoring in education. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and played hockey for UND. He followed university athletics and was proud of his 50 yr letterman’s pin presented... Read More	Carl Morken Jr. passed away at the Avow Hospice House in Naples, Florida November 29, 2020. Carl was born January 9, 1930 to Carl and Anna (Tangen) Morken in Pekin, North Dakota. The family moved to Grand Forks in 1936. Carl attended schools in Grand Forks graduating from Central High School in 1948. He attended the University of North Dakota majoring in education. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and played hockey for UND. He followed university athletics and was proud of his 50 yr letterman’s pin presented at one of the UND home games. While at UND Carl was in ROTC. He received his commission serving as an officer in the US Army during the Korean War. In April of 1951, Carl married Sandra Page. They lived in Grand Forks and had four children. Carl raised his children to believe they could do anything. It didn’t matter if you were a girl or boy, it was an equal opportunity household. Carl was always involved in enhancing the lives of young people in the community through his work as a Cub Scout Leader, Big Brother program and hockey coach while attending graduate school. He spent 37 years as an educator and elementary principal in the Grand Forks Public School System retiring in 1988 as he transitioned to a busy retirement life as “part-time farmer”, woodworker, rental landlord, world traveler and his most important role, grandfather. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren “life skills” and closely followed their many accomplishments in academics, fine arts and athletics. Carl was a self taught carpenter and woodworker. He built beautiful pieces of furniture that his family continues to enjoy today. In 1959 he bought land on Union Lake and built the family lake cabin. A legacy that brings continued joy to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 1983, Carl married Penny Ackerland. Carl and Penny became Florida snowbirds in 1998 spending winters in Naples, Florida and summers in Grand Forks visiting family and friends. Carl loved animals and could always be found with a dog by his side. He was a proud North Dakota Boy. Carl and Penny traveled the world but he always loved to return to the peace and beauty of the Red River and Sheyenne Valleys of North Dakota. Survived by his wife Penny Morken, former wife Sandra Morken, children, Dawnn (Denny Kyle) Morken, Carla (Don) Kramer, Bill (Alice) Morken, brother, David (Mary) Morken, grandchildren, Jamie (Eric) Macho, Sean & Kelly Kyle, Tyler, Tanner (Anna) & Toby Simmers, Tiahna (Alex) Edevold, Zakery Kramer, Keilani & Kiara Holweger, Trenor Morken and great grandchildren, Jackson, Solveig, Charlotte, Rowan, Simon, Veda, Selah, Alma, Aidan, Layla, Nellie, and many nieces and nephews. Godsons: Roger Draper, Jim McEnroe and Brian Kennedy. Carl was preceded in death by his parents Carl & Anna (Tangen) Morken, sister, Margaret (Nels) Ellertson, brothers Harding (Marian) Morken, Ralph Cameron Morken and infant son Mark Page Morken. Memorials preferred to Grand Forks Education Foundation, Circle of Friends Humane Society, CVIC or another organization of your choice. A celebration of life service will be held in the summer of 2021.
