Carl Henry Hodde, son of Frederick Hodde, was born at Schottinghausen, Westphalia, Germany on August 24, 1853. His mother having died in his early youth, he was raised by his grandparents. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church of his home. On July 18, 1879, he was married to Margaretha Vette, who passed away but a few months before their golden wedding anniversary. This union was blessed with five children, of whom one son died in childhood. A daughter, Mrs. Wilhelmina Minor, died in 1924 and the son, Carl, Jr. in 1933. Mr. and Mrs. Hodde emigrated to America in 1881 and came directly to Seward county. Shortly after, they purchased the farm a mile north of the St. Paul's Lutheran church where they spent the rest of their lives. When the St. Paul's Lutheran church was organized in 1890, he was one of the charter members and remained a faithful member until his death. He was the oldest person in the congregation and the last one of the organizers. (The widow of one of the organizers is the only charter member still living.) Mr. Hodde had a remarkable constitution and enjoyed good health until advanced in age. Three years ago he suffered a stroke from which he rallied after having been bedfast for some months. Thereafter he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Fred Minor, near Garland. To the feebleness of old age complications were added and nine weeks ago he took to his bed. He suffered much pain which ended only when he passed away last Monday morning at 5:15 o'clock. He reached the age of 83 years, 6 months and 19 days. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Fred Minor and husband, of Garland; Mrs. Anna Lindner, of Pleasant Dale, by 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Mr. Hodde had a quiet dispostion, was industrious and active until his first illness in 1934 and was an ideal neighbor. He was esteemed by all who knew him.
