Description	:	CARL JOHANNES (CHARLEY) JOHNSON HISTORY Carl Johannes Johnson usually used his initials "C.J.". He was born in Toten, Norway September 21, 1865. When he was about six months old, he came to the United States with his family. (He became very sick and was not expected to live.) When the family landed in New York, they had no money, so they had to write to the Hexom family (already at Decorah, Iowa) for funds. Carl's family included his parents, five brothers and two sisters. In 1874, at the age of nine, he came to the Madison, SD area. The church was always important in his life. The first church services were held at the Lars Johnson home. Later Lake Madison Lutheran Church was organized and Lars donated the land for the church. C.J. was confirmed on November 26, 1880 and was a member of the first class of confirmands at Lake Madison Church. C.J. probably had only a sixth grade education, although he did attend nigh classes at the Normal School in Madison for two winters. It was there he met Gudbjor Halverson. She was working in the food service or kitchen at the college. The couple was married on September 20, 1888 by the Rev. Shirley at his home, which was located where the condominiums now stand on the east part of Madison on old Highway 34. One of C.J.'s daughters-in-law, Mae, later lived in that house with her parents, the Hollingsworths. There were many trees and a big garden there at the time. The couple lived with C.J.'s folks for a while and later moved to a farm near Ruthland, SD. Nine children were born: six boys and three girls. Mother Johnson's chief interest outside of her home was the Ladies' Aid. At one time the Aid was divided into three groups: each group meeting separately in the various homes. Since traveling with horse and buggy was slow, they started their meetings in the forenoon, were served a big dinner at noon, and continued their meetings in the afternoon. One summer day it was Mother Johnson's turn to entertain the "Kvin-deforening" in her home. It was strawberry season, and Mother Johnson's patch was full of rip berries that day. Upon arrival, the Aid members first picked all the berries before starting the meeting in earnest. Needless to say, everyone had a bowl of strawberries and cream in addition to the regular meal at noon. In 1921 Mother Johnson assisted Rev. C. K. Solberg in organizing the Ruthland Ladies' Aid. Consequently she served as president of two Ladies' Aids simultaneously. C.J.'s and Gudbjor's life was not without sorrow. Their little girl, Mina, drowned in the watertank when she was 1 1/2 years old. She and her sister, Clara, then three years old, were playing near the tank when somehow or other Mina fell into the water. Clara hurried to the house to tell her Mother, but help arrived too late. Two other children died early in their lives. Lars and Agnes both passed away in the early years of their married lives, leaving small children, some of whom were then cared for at their grandparent's home. In the fall of the year, C.J. would go out stack threshing and later would haul the bundles of grain to the threshing machine. During the stack threshing, C.J. and his crew would stay at different homes. Some homes were not clean, so bed bugs were a problem at C.J.'s home. Much work was required getting the beds clean and kerosene was used to accomplish this. C.J. was very active in church work and community activities. He was treasurer of the Lake Madison Church for many years. He served on the Ruthland school board and was president when the mortgage was burned. He was a member of the creamery board at Flandreau and once ran for the Senate on the non-partisan ticket. The following are a few items of interest about C.J.: 1. He had a hand that was injured in a corn picker accident. He had a car accident coming home from a creamery meeting at Flandreau, which disabled him some. 2. When C.J. and his wife bought overalls for the boys, they would cut off the labels. 3. C.J. never liked other children to call him grandpa...only his own grandchildren. 4. He always liked books. He went to an auction one day and bought a box of books. Gudbjor wouldn't let him bring them into the house, so he put them on a shelf in the machine shed. 5. He had many friends. Probably one of his best friends was John Molstad. The two men were both farmers and were threshing friends. Gudbjor died on October 20, 1928 at their home. She had diabetes. C.J. continued to live on the farm until it was sold to McGraths and then moved to a farm near Lake Madison, which was owned by J.A. Johnson. In his later years, he lived with his son, Roy. He helped when he could. He babysat for his granddaughter, holding her and reading to her. During these years he sat and read his Bible alot. He remained interested in local affairs and in state and national current events. He was bedridden for about six weeks before his death on March 17, 1956. He was 90 years old.
