His father Koop Mast was in 1882 a laborer, residing at the country village of Beets, municipality Opsterland, located in the mid southeastern part of province Friesland. In all those other mentioned years he was a skipper. The family Mast resided in November 1884 and May 1886 at the village of Beetsterzwaag, the seat of municipality Opsterland, Friesland. In November 1895 they lived in the country village of Sint Annaparochie, the seat of municipality Het Bildt, located in the northwestern part of province Friesland. On 15 September 1903 Koop Mast (7 y), his father Koop Mast (50 y, laborer), his mother Minka (44), his siblings Pieter (21, laborer), Albert Mast (18, laborer), Aaltje (17) and Hendricus (5) arrived on the S.S. Rijndam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Almelo and their destination was Utica, New York, where a friend was living. In May 1910 Carl Mast (14, Holland, immigrated in 1904 [has to be: 1903]), his father Carl Mast (57, Holland, immigrated in 1904, laborer at a machine shop), his mother Mimie (51, Holland, immigrated in 1904, mother of 4 living children), and his brothers Albert (15, Holland, immigrated in 1904, laborer at a machine shop) and Henery (12, Holland, immigrated in 1904) were living in a rented house in Northbridge, Worcester County, located in the southeastern part of Massachusetts. It's quite likely that his father Carl (Koop) and brother Albert Mast worked at Whitin Machine Shop, at its peak the largest manufacturer of textile machines in the world. In 1911 the family Mast moved from the USA to Canada, province Alberta, first to its capital Edmonton, but soon thenafter to the Dutch agrarian settlement of Neerlandia. His father Koop Peter Mast and his brother Albert M. Mast were two of the 16 Dutchmen who founded Neerlandia, starting in December 1911. Neerlandia is a hamlet in central Alberta within the County of Barrhead and situated between Mellowdale and Vega, approximately 20 kilometers north of Barrhead and northwest of Westlock. The name "Neerlandia" refers to the first settlers' country of origin, the Netherlands. In January of 1911, Henry Kippers began a Dutch Colonization society with the goal to create a Dutch Farming community. The community formation began on December 18, 1911 with 16 men filling for land permits at the Dominion of Lands Office in Edmonton, Alberta. These men were John Anema, Rients de Jager, Drikus Huinink, Cornelius Ingwersen, Albert M. Mast, Koop Peter Mast, Johan Messelink, Henry J. Micheal, Menne Nanninga, Albert J. Oldegbers, Hendrik Schoonekamp, Berend te Ronde, Douwe Terpsma, John Terpsma, Siebren Tiemstra and Willem van Ark. This was followed by Fred Baron and Henry J. Kippers on December 26, 1911 and finally Arie Emmerzael on February 6, 1912. The surrounding area is largely agricultural based with many people in the out-lying area also being involved in construction and other trades as well. Carl found first work at a meat packing plant at Edmonton, but after his father Koop (Carl) Mast died in 1915 he went to help his mother Minke and brother Henry on the homestead in Neerlandia. On June 11, 1918, during WW I, Carl Mast (22 years old, farmer in Neerlandia and member of the Dutch Christian Reformed Church) was conscripted in the Canadian Infantry, 1st Depot Battalion, Alberta Regiment. Rank: private. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall. He served priorly in 1914 during 3 months in the 101st Edmonton Fusiliers. After attending Alberta College in Edmonton during the twenties, Carl worked as a truck driver between Westlock and Edmonton. While trucking he got arthritis very badly and had to spend a long time in the Westlock Hospital. In Westlock he met the eleven years younger Anna Mary Nusl, who was born in Czechia and chief cook in the Westlock Hotel. They were married on June 8, 1940. Soon after they were married they adopted Marilyn Ann (born May 15, 1941), and, later, Kenneth Carl (July 27, 1948). Carl and Anna lived at Neerlandia Corner, where Carl also built a machine shed and became a dealer for Oliver and John Deere machinery. He also worked for a time as a subagent with various insurance companies, and, later, became an agent himself. He had a real estate business too, and besides this he was a Justice of the Peace and since fall 1939 a trustee, representing the Neerlandia area in the Pembine School Division. Carl Kenneth Mast died in September 1956 in Neerlandia at the age of 61 years of a heart attack. His wife Anna Mary died in December 1972 at the age of 65 years in Edmonton of liver cancer.
