Born in China on Oct. 3, 1928, he was the son of Robert A. and Sarah (Ferris) Fletcher. Carl was educated in China schools and served in the Air Force as a sergeant, just after World War II. Carl was employed by Ellerton Jette, president of C.F.Hathaway Co. He then worked for 27 years at Maine Central Railroad in Waterville as a crane loader operator, brakeman and car inspector. Born in China on Oct. 3, 1928, he was the son of Robert A. and Sarah (Ferris) Fletcher. Carl was educated in China schools and served in the Air Force as a sergeant, just after World War II. Carl was employed by Ellerton Jette, president of C.F.Hathaway Co. He then worked for 27 years at Maine Central Railroad in Waterville as a crane loader operator, brakeman and car inspector. He was married to Opal J. Stewart in China on Oct. 2, 1970. She died on April 2, 1989. Mr. Fletcher retired in 1994. Carl was a member of China Baptist Church and China Village Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially loved his dog, Buster, who was his constant companion. Surviving are two daughters, Debbie Wallace of Wildwood, Fla., and Lois Smeelink of Orlando, Fla.; a stepson, Terry Little of Cooper; two stepdaughters, Belinda Winn of China and Karen "Christy" Caron of Oakland; four sisters, Virginia Black of China, Marjorie Bucklin of Northeast Harbor, Florence Young of China and Ruth Bumps of Vassalboro; his brother, Paul Fletcher of China; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Five brothers died previously: Stanley, Byron, Ralph, Harold and William Fletcher. At his request, there will be no calling hours. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Chadwick Hill Cemetery, Route 32, South China, with the Rev. Ronald Morrell officiating. Committal prayers and burial will follow. Arrangements are by Gray & Pratt Funeral Home, Windsor Neck Road, Windsor. Memorial donations may be made to HealthReach Hospice, P.O. Box 1568, Waterville 04903-1568.
