He was born July 3, 1919, son of Furrel Varner Good and Lilly Mae Chapman Good on the old Gilmore Creek in Parkerville Township, Morris County, Kansas. He joined the Methodist Church in Wilsey, KS at the age of 17 and always remained true to that faith. He had a deep and abiding faith in the Lord. From his youth he was a cowboy and always loved horses and the cowboy life. He enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps on Oct 7, 1936, an intermittent work relief program from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal for the Depression. When he wasn't working with the CCC's, he began working with a local farmer named Clyde Varnes. He worked with him until he went into the Army in 1942 in the midst of World War II. He was captured on July 17, 1943, in Sicily. He escaped the prisoner of war camp and lived in the mountains of Italy for almost a year before making it back to the Allied lines, an experience that would forever change his life. His mother had been notified that he was Missing in Action and assumed dead before his return, so what joyful news it was that he had survived! He married Nadine Ellen Hughes in Fort Smith, Arkansas on October 5, 1944. They were the parents of six children. Except for brief exceptions, they lived in the Council Grove area all of their lives. Together they worked hard to provide for their family. He loved farming and farmed in the Wilsey area. He remained involved with and interested in farming until his death. He worked at Fairmont Foods for many years. When Council Grove's Fairmont plant closed, he began working for the City Water Department and also put in many years there. Through all of these busy years as they were raising their family, he was also a Volunteer Fireman for the City of Council Grove. As with all of his responsibilities, he took this responsibility very seriously. His wife Nadine preceded him in death on Dec 30, 1987. He married Katherine King McDiffett on March 3, 1991, in Alta Vista, and she also preceded him in death on Feb 7, 2010. They lived both in Alta Vista and Council Grove. Also preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers, George and Clarence, his sister, Edith and his great-grandson, Caleb Lee Monroe and great-granddaughter, Autumn Joy Jones. He is survived by a large and growing posterity of 87, including his six children and their spouses, Alvin and Carla Stone, Danny and Joy Good, Dennis and Nancy Good, Don and Rose Good, all of Council Grove; Dave and Evelyn Good of Emporia, and Ron and Sharon Good of Key West, Florida. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren (with four more on the way), and three great-great grandchildren. Surviving siblings are his sisters, Emma Tiffin of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Ruby Moden of Lakewood, California, and his brothers Bert Good of Abilene, Texas, and John Good of Ventura, California. His sisters-in-law and their spouses, Irene Hughes Sherrer, and husband Glen of Topeka, and Connie Hughes Neal, and husband Larry of Quinomo, New Mexico, also survive. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m., at the Council Grove United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Thursday, at the Council Grove United Methodist Church, with Pastor Larry Buss officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
