Having been proudly named after his paternal grandfather, Carl was born to the late Herchel Wilber Layman and Lola Viola (Dennis) on December 15, 1928. Having been proudly named after his paternal grandfather, Carl was born to the late Herchel Wilber Layman and Lola Viola (Dennis) on December 15, 1928. Being the 5th born out of 7 siblings, Carl's childhood in Herman was full of adventure. Fishing and farm chores took a backseat when he went to grade school at Hillcreek and then when he graduated from Fremont High School in 1946, but he always kept himself occupied. Working at Hormel meatpacking plant for over 30 years and in addition to being one of the top salesmen of Mineralax livestock feed, Carl still found time for his other passions. His leadership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as a Branch President, Bishop and his love of service of being a home teacher to his fellow church members cultivated his faith. While most retirees lounge in coffee shops or on the golf course, you would most likely find him enjoying his silver years either on the fishing pond or enjoying his time at the spacious acreage that was home to him and his family since 1966. There, notably among the apple and cherry trees, he would either be fiddling with the tractor, telling stories of his Golden Glove boxing days or sharing events of his Army Service where he served in the Pacific Front after WWII shortly after high school graduation. Most importantly, his family was there, the true treasures of his life. During his first marriage to Caroline Kellogg, six children were born: Tim, Terry, Tom, Tyler, Tammy, and Theresa. During his second marriage to Doris Ellen (Blake), more children were born: Julie, JoDee, Pam, and Mark. Doris brought three children into the union from a previous marriage: Patty, Jim, and Larry. Together, on the beautiful homestead, with his family is where he truly enjoyed life.
