Louis Groeteke (1851-1934) and his father Bill homesteaded in Ridgeley Township, , Dodge, Nebraska in 1868. In his lifetime he owned many farms in Dodge and Dixon Counties. His parents were Wilhelm, born 30 Mar 1828 an Maria (Spaeth) Groteke, born 12 October 1824 from Helsen, Furstenthum, Waldeck Province, Germany. About 1861 Bill immigrated to Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois and worked on a farm for two years before he could send for his wife and children Louisa, Ludwig and Fredericka. It took them seven weeks and four days to cross the ocean in a sail ship. It took another seventeen days to travel on land to Geneseo. During the five years in Illinois Louisa, born 11 February 1845, married 8 February 1864 to Jacob Schuler, a widower with five children. Early in 1868 Bill Groteke, Christian Spaeth, and Jacob Schuler families traveled to Nebraska in six prairie schooners. This group of eighteen people had many hardships including heavy snowstorms. It took nearly four weeks to travel to Fremont, , Dodge, Nebraska. Here they were directed twenty-five miles northwest to Ridgeley Township where all families homesteaded. My ancestors lived in their covered wagon until lumber could be hauled from Fremont to build a house. There were only three houses between Fremont and their land; no bridges across any of the streams. To cross the creeks the men built their own bridges by cutting long 'stringers' along the creek; laid them across the water and piled brush and dirt on top. Ludwig at age 20 received his Patent from the United States Government for his 80 acres at $2.50 an acre. At this time sixty acres of land was broken and under cultivation with rowing crops of wheat, oats, and corn. He had a mile of osage orange hedge and two acres of young timber set out. The crops were put in on sod which gave a very poor yield. During the winter evenings the corn was shelled by hand and when a wagon load was finally ready for market it was hauled across country to Fremont and received 10 a bushel for the corn. It was sacked and shipped east. Wheat was milled into flour at West Point, later at Pebble. Three years in succession during 1870's, grasshoppers stripped the fields of all vegetation. In the fall it was so windy that hay had to be hauled after sundown. On 26 January 1875 Fredericka married Gottlieb Lowe at here parents' home and lived on his homestead near-by. Mary Groeteke died 8 January 1889 and her husband died 13 September 1904,. Both are buried at Pebble Cemetery, Scribner, Nebraska. Minna Wendy was born 7 February 1858, Frischubensrug, Posen Province, West Prussia to August Wilhelm Wendt and Albertine Friederike (Holz, Kitzerow). Minna immigrated to New York City when sixteen and worked as housekeeper for 3-1/2 years before traveling west to Pebble to be with her sister Mrs. Mathias (Bertha) Thernes and family. On 25 January 1878 Minna married Louis at his parents' home by a Lutheran minister from Pebble. Many friends, neighbors and relatives celebrated the marriage with a dance which was held in one of the rooms of the farmhouse. Just preceding the ceremony was the infant baptism of Mary Lowe. Her Godparents were Uncle Louis and bride Minna. The bride and groom lived with his parents before their own home was built. Their mode of travel was in a lumber wagon. Their children were: Wilhelmine Bertha (Louise) born born 8 December 1878; married Henry Carl Shomshor on 1 May 1901; died 17 November 1959. Wilhelm Friedrich (Bill) born 15 June 1880; married Clara Wiegand on 13 February 1905; died 29 July 1933. Albertine Caroline born 2 April 1882; died 17 July 1882; buried Pebble Cemetery. Friederika Maria Caroline (Frieda) born 22 October 1883; married Charles Hauslein, M.D. on 26 May 1920; died 9 April 1977. Martha Wilhelmine born 20 January 1887; married Louis Baier on 13 May 1908; died 16 December 1975. Herman Karl Heinrich, born 24 April 1889; married Elizabeth Boyle on 7 January 1914; died 25 November 1968. Charina Maria (Katharine) born 18 Jul 1891; married Friedrick Wupper on 25 November 1915; died 18 November 1918. Arthur Wilhelm Fritz Groeteke (Art), my father (Marguerite Groeteke Knapp) born 1 April 1894; married Kate Margaretha Knuth on 14 February 1917; died 4 may 1981. Louis, born 1 June 1851 and died 14 April 1934; Minna died 3 September 1948; both buried at Ridge Cemetery, Fremont, Nebraska. There were twelve grandchildren and five still live in Nebraska."
