Russell received his education in Decatur, Appanoose and Davis Counties and graduated from Eldon High School. At an early age, he was baptized in the RLDS Church and now is a member of the Community of Christ. He was ordained as a Deacon and later ordained as an Elder in his church. He was united in marriage to Donna LaVaughn Stephenson on August 18, 1977 at Miami, Oklahoma. Russell worked for Chicago Rock Island, Pacific, Burlington Northern, Iowa Interstate, Cedar River and Chicago North Western railroad companies over his career. He retired as a Signalman for Union Pacific. After his retirement, Russell and Donna moved to a small acreage in Decatur County where he had room for his wares, which some may have called junk. Russell was a firearms enthusiast and had a strong belief in the 2nd amendment. He believed all owners had a deep responsibility of their uses. He enjoyed his time in the field with his son, Brad and his nephew, Mike. Russell was a Master Mason and served as Master at New Hope Lodge #480 in Eldon, Iowa and also at Emblem Lodge #189 in Pleasanton, Iowa. Those relatives who preceded Russell in death were his parents; wife, Donna LaVaughn McDaniel, son, Kerry Lee McDaniel; brother, Charles McDaniel, sisters-in-law, Sandra McDaniel and Judith McDaniel; brothers-in-law, Sam Roger, Ronald Stephenson, William Marker and Eldon Stephenson. Russell leaves to cherish his memory; son, Brad (Terressa) McDaniel, daughter, Maureena Bodkins, daughter, Marcia McDaniel, step-daughter, Shirley (Barry) Wright of Lucas, IA, step-daughter, Connie Morris of Hemet, CA, step-daughter, Diana Hanks of Hemet, CA, step-son, Dan Harrington of New Virginia, IA, step-son, Kenny Duane (Wanda) Morris of Gonzales, LA; brother, Dennis McDaniel and sister, Goldie McDaniel both of Florida; sister-in-law, Shirley Marker of Indianola, IA as well as other relatives and many friends.
