Carl S. Elmore Jr., 81, of Fort Dodge and formerly of Gowrie, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010 at the Fort Dodge Villa Care Center.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 8 at the United Methodist Church, Gowrie, with Pastor Jane Shepherd officiating. Burial will be in Paton Township Cemetery, Paton, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Peterson Post #431 of Gowrie. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday (today) at Palmer Funeral Home in Gowrie.

Surviving is his wife, Opal of Fort Dodge; son, Roy Elmore of Fort Dodge; four grandchildren, Ben Elmore and his wife Kristi, Chris Elmore and his wife Tiffany, Monica Elmore and Jon Elmore; great-granddaughter, Baileigh Elmore; brother, Lowell Elmore and his wife Betty of Peachtree City, Ga.; sister, Phyllis Sandbloom and her husband Bill of Redding, Calif.; sister-in-law, Bette Elmore of Cherry Valley, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl S. and Flossie (Pack) Elmore Sr. and a brother, Howard Elmore.
Carl S. Elmore Jr. was born Nov. 1, 1928 in Lena, Iowa and graduated from Lanyon Consolidated High School in 1946. He graduated from the Graduate School of Banking, University of Wisconsin in 1967 and also graduated from the Agricultural Credit School, Iowa State University at Ames in 1969, and many schools conducted by the U.S. Army.
He enlisted in the U.S. Regular Army in May, 1946 and served in the Finance Corps in the United States, Italy, Japan, Korea and Austria. He was honorably discharged in October 1952. He re-entered the U.S. Army Reserve in 1957 and then retired as Sergeant Major at age 60 on Nov. 1, 1988.
Carl was united in marriage to Opal Bradshaw on Jan. 10, 1953 at Lanyon Mission Covenant Church in Lanyon.
Carl moved to Gowrie, Iowa in October 1960. He worked at lst National Bank, Gowrie, Iowa from June 1960 to December 1978. During this time the bank changed charter to lst State Bank, and he worked as Cashier of the bank until 1978. He was then self-employed for various insurance companies for three years. Following this, he served as an accountant for Buske Industries, Inc. of Gowrie, Iowa, a manufacturing company. He also worked part time as an accountant for Lee Benson Chevrolet, Gowrie, Iowa from January 1959 to January 1995. Carl and Opal moved to Fort Dodge in October 1997.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gowrie, American Legion Peterson Post #431, the Non-Commissioned Officers Association (lifetime member), served as President of the Webster County Bankers Association twice, Secretary-Treasurer of the Gowrie Commercial Club for 18 years, and Town Treasurer of Gowrie, Iowa for 16 years. In addition, he was a member of Retired Finance Corps NCO's and the Finance Corps Association. Carl was also a past member of the Association of the U.S. Army and Korean War Veterans Association.
Carl loved his family and grandchildren. He liked taking them on little trips and going out to eat. He took pride in his garden and shared the produce with friends.
