He was born on March 16, 1920 in Wapello County to James and Ada Thomas Batterson. He married Bonnie Rupe on Aug. 20, 1941, in Lancaster, Mo. "Shorty" Batterson, 78, of Eldon, died at 4:55 p.m. on July 25, 1998, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center. He was born on March 16, 1920 in Wapello County to James and Ada Thomas Batterson. He married Bonnie Rupe on Aug. 20, 1941, in Lancaster, Mo. He was raised and educated in Eldon, graduating from the Eldon High School in 1938. He had farmed and was formerly employed by the John Morrell Co. in Ottumwa. He was later employed by the Cardinal School district for 12 years, retiring in 1985. He is survived by his wife; three sons, James of Washington, Mo., Robert of Eldon and Darrell of Laurel; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bernice Thill of Ottumwa and Mary Kaltenberger of Greenley, Colo.; and a brother, Kenneth of Drakesville. He was preceded in death by two sons, Lonnie and Michael; daughter, Marilyn; three sisters, Leatha Orman, Willa Rupe and Wilma Martsching; and a brother, Walter. Services will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kremer Funeral Home in Eldon, the Rev. David Albert officiating. Burial will be in the Fiedler Cemetery near Eldon. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Darren, Travis, James, Chad and Jeromy Batterson and Ray Taylor. Open visitation will begin after 9 a.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be left to the Center of Hope at the Tenco Co. in Ottumwa.
