Shively born 1891 in Douglas, Butler Co., Kansas; died July 10, 1952 in Riverside, Connecticut. Carlton A. Shively graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1911., later studying at Columbia University. He was elected to Phi Bete Kappa. On 26 March 1927, Carlton was married to Marie Wilson. A son was born of this marriage. On 28 August 1930, a decree of divorce was entered in a court of the state of Nevada In 1950 Carlton became stock market analyst writer for the merged papers World s-Telegram and The Sun. (address 46 Commerce Street, NY and Riverside, Connecticut). On 8 July 1952 Carlton A. Shively died in Connecticut. His son had reached the age of 21. Marie (Wilson) Shively remarried June 1953. Following Marie's re-marriage, a court case argued 3 Dec 1959 before the United States Court of Appeals, Second Court and decided 25 March 1960 regarding a $40 monthly payment to Marie from the estate of Carlton A. Shively. The following is an edit shared by Peggy Bargen Duey: Funeral arrangements were being made Wednesday for Carlton L. Shively, 61, of Riverside, Conn., who died of a heart attack while alone in New York City at the home of a friend. He was formerly a Nelson resident and was well known here. Mr. Shively was a familiar figure in the financial district of New York for 32 years and was a stock market analyst and leading financial columnist for the New York World-Telegram and Sun. Born Oct. 18, 1890, in Douglass, Kan., he was graduated from Nelson high school in 1907 and the University of Nebraska in 1911. He studied at Columbia in 1916-17 and then went to France with the American Expeditionary forces in World War I. Mr. Shively was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Shively. He was Deputy Clerk of the District Court of this county under his father, and upon the latter’s death on Aug. 16, 1915, he was appointed to complete the term.
