Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 12, 2019, at the Springfield Lutheran Church, 1969 Middle Calmar Road, Decorah, with Rev. Anita Nuetzsman officiating. Carol Ann Marie (Ehler) Gluth was born in Castalia, IA on March 30, 1939. She died peacefully on April 5, 2019 at the Aase Haugen Home in Decorah, IA, surrounded by family. The daughter of farming parents, Bernard and Signe Ehler, she grew to understand the importance of family and hard work alongside her five siblings. As a student in the South Winneshiek school district she was an enthusiastic basketball player not afraid to “throw an elbow” when the situation warranted. On September 6, 1958 she said “Yes” to the love of her life, Bernhard “Bernie” Gluth. Together they enjoyed a lot of adventures and fun times as a couple and with family and friends. Bernie and Carol celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2018. A true example of what love and commitment is about. Within the first five years of their marriage their family grew to include three children: Jan, Kevin and Kari . . . and a dog, Banji. As a family they had numerous camping adventures, family vacations and a very large garden. Honestly, Dad liked gardening, the rest of us not so much, however, we like to eat, so we grew to like it. Her love for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren is endless and abundant. The life of this very special woman was experienced by those close to her as an extension of the love of Jesus. Her door was always open for those to enjoy a cup of coffee and conversation or a warm meal and a place to stay for the night. Her enjoyment of sewing and quilting resulted in handcrafted clothing for her children in their school years and beyond to quilts for each of her grandchildren with a note sewn into them which reads “whenever this blanket is wrapped around you, you will feel my arms and papa’s wrapped around you.” She was active in many community and church volunteer activities including serving on the church council, quilting, cancer research fund raising and Luren Auxilary. Many times she was the organizer of community events and family gatherings. Carol’s penchant for putting thoughts into words paid off as she served so well in secretarial duties which afforded her employment at Decorah Lutheran Church, Luther College, Telnet, Monona Wire, the Mental Health Center and in various other work places. These skills were also put to use as she followed her passion for family genealogy. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Signe (Borness) Ehler; mother-in-law, Erna (Panitzke) Gluth; brothers, Lester Johnson and Gerald Ehler; brothers-in-law Kenneth Kolaas, Herb Parker and Eugene Gluth; sister, Phyllis Jauert; sisters-in-law, Gloria Johnson and Judy Gluth; great-granddaughter, Kristen Stortz. She is survived by her husband, Bernhard (Bernie) Gluth; children, Janann Gluth King and her husband, Carl King; Kevin and Karol Gluth; Kaarin and Marvin Sears. Grandchildren; Megan Gluth-Bohan and Peg Bohan; Carl and Heather Stortz; Mollie and Tanner Tjossem; Olivia King, Natalie King, and Emma Sears. Great grandchildren: Sara and Jolie Bohan and Ellinor Stortz. Sisters; Christine Kolaas and Wanda (Mike) Johnson; Sisters-in-law, Judy Ehler and Betty Parker; Brother-in-law Kenneth Jauert; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In lieu of flowers, Carol has requested that memorials be directed to: American Cancer Society as Carol is a breast cancer survivor or Infants Remembered in Silence (IRIS) at 218 3rd Ave NW, Faribault, MN 55021.
