Description	:	Carol Jean Elwood, daughter of Frederick Keith Elwood and Jane (Jennie) Orr was born August 23, 1898 at Stanberry Missouri. She passed away at Regional Health Services in Cresco, Iowa on Saturday, December 7, 2002. At five years of age, she and her family moved to Elma, IA where she entered grade school. Read More	Carol Jean Elwood, daughter of Frederick Keith Elwood and Jane (Jennie) Orr was born August 23, 1898 at Stanberry Missouri. She passed away at Regional Health Services in Cresco, Iowa on Saturday, December 7, 2002. At five years of age, she and her family moved to Elma, IA where she entered grade school. In 1912 the Elwoods moved to Lime Springs, where Carol attended Grade school and High School. She continued her education at Huron College, Huron, SD. She was a member of the Eta Sigma Sorority. Carol also attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette. In 1919 she graduated from Capitol City Commercial College, Des Moines. Carol was the eighth daughter in a family of nine girls. As a young woman Carol taught in the rural schools of Howard County, the business department of the High School at Eveleth, MN, and (after her marriage to Loren) at the Grade School in Lime Springs. During that time she also coached the Lime Springs basketball team. On September 8, 1920, Carol and Loren William Johnson were united in marriage at the home of her parents in Cresco. One daughter Phyllis Jane, was born to Carol and Loren. The Johnson's lived in the same home at 310 North Miller all their married life, with the exception of a period of time when they resided in Burlingame, CA while Loren served with the US Navy during WWII. Carol was a life long member of the United Methodist Church and was an active follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. Rarely did she miss worship services or any church related gathering unless health would not permit. She enjoyed singing in the choir and serving as a member of the Administrative Council. She taught Sunday School and for a number of years served as Sunday School Superintendent. Carol was President of the United Methodist Women for four consecutive years. Other organizations include Community Band, Past Matron of Utopia Chapter #379, Order of the Eastern Star and is currently a member of the New Hampton Chapter #75. Carol was past President and charter member of the Oneota Club, General Federation of Women's Clubs; and member of the American Legion Auxilary Post #545. The women's bible study group to which she belonged, afforded her much fulfillment and she loved the discussion and learning experienced with that group of dear friends. Preceding her in death were her husband Loren, her parents, and eight sisters. She leaves her daughter and son-in-law Phyllis and Harlan Stevenson; a granddaughter, Laney, and her husband Rick Kuhl; three great granddaughters Kari, Lindsey, and Kristen; and other family and friends. One of Carol's pleasures was expressing her thoughts in poetry. The following brief verse tells her outlook on life. Dear Lord, Thank you for the troubles that helped make me strong. Thank you for your mercy, the times that I was wrong. Thank you for the blessings, the love, the joy, the tears. Thank you Lord for life itself, for precious golden years. --Carol Johnson
