Description	:	Portland, Ore.--Carol J. Matye, a 30-year educator at Washington and Roosevelt High Schools in Portland, died Tuesday, June 14, from complications of a stroke and ongoing diabetes. He began teaching and coaching wrestling and football in Portland public schools in 1957 at Washington High School. He remained at Washington until its closure in 1981. He then served at Roosevelt High School until his retirement in 1987. He was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Great Falls. Matye, a 30-year educator at Washington and Roosevelt High Schools in Portland, died Tuesday, June 14, from complications of a stroke and ongoing diabetes. He began teaching and coaching wrestling and football in Portland public schools in 1957 at Washington High School. He remained at Washington until its closure in 1981. He then served at Roosevelt High School until his retirement in 1987. He was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Great Falls. He grew up in Sand Coulee, where he attended elementary school, and attended Centerville High School near Great Falls. He excelled in athletics. He began work at the University of Montana in Missoula upon graduation, but his career was interrupted by a call to serve in World War II. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served as gunner, flight engineer, and later as a pilot in the 5th Air Force, flying in the South Pacific and rising to the rank of major. He continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve after the war, and later in the Army Reserve where he continued to train reservists until his retirement. After five years of active duty during World War II, he returned to the Univ. of Mont., where he again distinguished himself in athletics, both in football and wresting. After coaching at Missoula County High School, he accepted a coaching position in Portland, where he served his remaining active years in Washington and Roosevelt High Schools. Survivors include his wife, Sybil; a son, Reese; two brothers, George and Daniel; and two sisters, Suzanne Bodine and Ruby Martinez; and numerous nieces and nephews.
