Read More	On Saturday, December 7, 2013, at 5:27 a.m., Carol Phyllis Goble of Columbia City, Indiana, began her heavenly journey embraced in love and nestled warmly within the cherished home she built with her devoted husband of more than sixty years, Jack Earl Goble. Born on February 14, 1934, she was the only child of Ralph Eugene Watson and Dorothy Berniece (Keisler) Watson, also of Columbia City. Carol was the apple of her father's eye and her mother's little princess. Raised on a bucolic 40-acre farm in Troy Township, she grew up loving nature and animals and, especially, kitties. Throughout her lifetime, stray cats needing a good meal, a gentle caress, and an inviting home always found their way to her – and were welcomed with open arms. Carol graduated from Larwill High School in 1952. There she met the fellow who captured her heart and she became Jack's "little chickie" when they married on December 28, 1952. Jack and Carol lived in Wichita Falls, Texas while Jack was stationed at Sheppard's Air Force Base. After Jack's military service ended, the couple returned home to Columbia City with a new addition to their family, Michael Lynn. Two other children followed in later years, Kris Alan and Robin Adel. Michael resides in Columbia City and Robin lives in Corrales, New Mexico. Kris Alan Goble entered heaven's gates on January 6, 1987 and is now reunited with the mother who loved and missed him so dearly. Once a talented professional secretary, Carol used her exceptional clerical skills in various positions until she began working at Columbia City Joint High School in 1967. Carol was initially a Librarian's Assistant and later worked in the high school's Computer Lab until she retired in 1999. She enjoyed her colleagues immensely and formed many lasting friendships. She also took great pleasure from all the young people she met (and sometimes scolded) at the high school over the years. Beloved by students as well, Carol received big hugs from former students she ran into from time-to-time throughout the community. She loyally supported athletic events at the high school before, and for many years after, her own daughter's athletic endeavors at CCJHS. Jack and Carol attended nearly every basketball game that Robin ever played (both home and away). Carol was not shy about expressing her displeasure over a bad call by shouting loudly enough for all to hear, "Ref, you dumb bunny!" – an admonishment that most certainly struck fear in the hearts of referees throughout northeastern Indiana. The CCJHS "lifetime" season pass for all athletic events that Carol received at retirement was a prized possession. Carol read voraciously and devoured countless books in her lifetime. She was also an avid gardener, lover of theater and music, and church pianist. Carol regularly attended Oak Grove Church of God for over forty years until health events prevented further attendance. She very much enjoyed fishing in her pond. However, in more recent years, she preferred to feed the fish food rather than turn the fish into food. Carol was a true and generous friend, and a wonderful wife and mother. Her absence from this world will be felt by many. Fate dealt a devastating blow when Carol was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She reacted with feisty determination and unyielding defiance to the very end. With the help of her family, and her beloved and devoted caregiver Melody Fry of Columbia City, Carol remained active and engaged with her community. The "girls" at Richards Restaurant made her feel special every day when she went there for lunch. Former students kept those hugs coming even after she could not remember who they were. Friends and past coworkers checked on her regularly despite them having become strangers in her mind. Her family will be forever grateful for every simple kindness and act of love extended to them and, especially, to Carol through these difficult times. Like the Ever-Ready Bunny, Carol just kept going and going and going until quite recently when her little body was simply done. Last year, she even traveled by train to Albuquerque, New Mexico as a 60th wedding anniversary present. Through it all, a committed core team of people steered Carol toward her deepest desire – remaining at home – a precious goal that was achieved. Some peace comes from knowing that she got as much out of life as she could under the circumstances and, in the end, got everything that she wanted. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10 at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11 at the funeral home. Dinner will follow at the Oak Grove Church of God Reception Hall on Raber Road, Columbia City. Preferred memorials are to Oak Grove Church of God or the Humane Society of Whitley County.
