She was loved by many and left a legacy that will never be forgotten by those who knew her. Read More	Jan. 25, 1926-March 10, 2011 Carole (Buness) Barenthsen, 85, of Powers Lake, N.D., went home to be with the Lord Thursday, March 10, 2011. She was loved by many and left a legacy that will never be forgotten by those who knew her. Born at Powers Lake Jan. 25, 1926, to Dave and Mildred Buness, Carole graduated from Powers Lake High School and completed a bachelor's degree at Minot State University. She taught in rural schools for 13 years, took a break to work in a photographer's studio and bakery in Sioux Falls, S.D., and then taught at Rickard School in Williston for another 13 years. She married Fred Barenthsen April 10, 1971, and they lived in Williston until moving in 1979 to Golden Valley Farm, five miles southwest of Powers Lake, where Carole's parents had lived. They lived on their hobby farm for 29 years and thoroughly enjoyed being as self-sufficient as possible. They raised chickens, goats and rabbits and were beekeepers. Carole and Fred planted a huge garden every year and canned and shared the produce. They decorated their yard with colorful flowerbeds and decorative items they made. They also enjoyed decorating and entertaining at their home. Carole was an accomplished cook and baker who loved to try new recipes and invite guests to join them. She set a beautiful table and even the guests who were reluctant to eat goats and rabbits had to admit that Carole's cooking talents overcame their initial reluctance. Carole was a multi-talented woman, enjoying interests such as oil painting, rosemaling, china painting, stamping, sewing, crocheting, quilting, knitting and reading. She also joined Fred in his hobby business, Barenthsen Kiddy Rides. They traveled to small town carnivals where they operated the mechanized kiddy rides that Fred had built. Carole sold concessions from their motor home. They also traveled throughout the United States in the motor home, seeing as many states as they could. In 2003 Fred and Carole left their beloved farm, and moved into Powers Lake to an apartment. In 2009 they were honored when more than 100 friends and family members gathered for the Fred and Carole Barenthsen Appreciation Day held at Bethel Baptist Church in Powers Lake. Carole's areas of service at Bethel Baptist Church over the years included being a deaconess, White Cross chairman, music committee member, Sunday School teacher and Bible School teacher. Carole found much inspiration and spiritual fulfillment in guiding a group of young women that began meeting for a Bible Study with Carole's mother as the leader. After Mildred's death, the Seekers' Bible Study group met in Carole's home with Carole providing the leadership for many years. Although Carole never had children of her own, many of those women said they considered her a second mother and stayed actively involved in her life the past few years as she and Fred suffered from ill health and became less active. Carole was also a strong role model and mother-like influence in the lives of the students she taught in school and for her nieces and nephews and their families. On Carole's birthday last year, Fred died after having battled cancer for four years. Carole lost her soul mate and best friend as her own health waned. Yet, she remained positive, always appreciative of family and friends who reached out to her and, in her last months, eager to go home to Heaven and grateful for the blessings God had given her on Earth. Her survivors include: sisters, Ardyce Enget, Powers Lake, Delight Macias, Minot, Sandra Buness, Loveland, Colo.; brother, David (Fay) Buness of Clancy, Mont.; brother-in-law, Dave Brenno, Minot; stepson, Richard (Shirley) Barenthsen; nieces, Candi (Barry) Helseth, Minot, Jodi (Jeff) Johnson, Carpio, Jennifer Dunn, Nashville, Tenn., Megan Buness, Denver, Colo.; nephews, Mark (Roxie) Enget of Denver, Steven (Rashelle) Buness, Omaha, Neb., Paris (Mary Beth) and Paul Brenno, Minot; and several grandnephews and grandnieces. Carole was preceded in death by a sister, Dawn Brenno, her parents and husband. Funeral services: Are set for Friday, March 18, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, Powers Lake, N.D.
