Description	:	Caroline Elizabeth Scanland's family moved by covered wagon from Wardensville, Virgina (now West Virgina) to Ohio when she was seven years old. Her father made his living as a wagon builder. Caroline later attended the Young Ladies Seminary in Worthington, Delaware County, Ohio. Upon completion of her formal schooling she worked as a seamstress making suits and shirts for gentlemen, and fine dresses for ladies until she married James Augustus Kenaston. Read More	Caroline Elizabeth Scanland's family moved by covered wagon from Wardensville, Virgina (now West Virgina) to Ohio when she was seven years old. Her father made his living as a wagon builder. Caroline later attended the Young Ladies Seminary in Worthington, Delaware County, Ohio. Upon completion of her formal schooling she worked as a seamstress making suits and shirts for gentlemen, and fine dresses for ladies until she married James Augustus Kenaston. They were married May 31, 1849 in Worthington, Delaware, Ohio. Caroline put her seamstress skills to good use in providing much needed clothing for their large family, they had thirteen children, three of which died in childhood. Caroline in 1851 attended a revival at Sugar Grove, Mercer County, Illinois where she was converted and became a member of The Brethren Church. She and James were married by Rev. Uriah Heath, a Methodist minister. James was 26 years old and Carolyn was 19 at the time. Witnesses were Pastor Heath's 16 year old daughter, Louise and James' cousin, Jeremiah Kenaston (his Uncle John's son). Caroline and her husband James moved many times over the years due to James' vocation as a United Brethern minister, establishing new churches, as well as a doctor. When first married they made their home with Caroline's parents as James was continuing his theological training and supporting them as a carpenter. Later they moved to Ohio, and then to Nebraska. In later life Caroline was diagnosed with Diabetes and her health went into a decline after their move to Brown County, Nebraska. It is here that she died. All ten of her children and her husband attended the funeral. Caroline's body was first buried at Pine Glen, Nebraska, but in 1925 her remains were reburied at Weeping Water, Nebraska where her eldest daughter, Helen Kenaston Gordon's family are now buried. Caroline and James' children are, daughters, Mary Helen Gordon, Florence Taylor Diehl, Sarah Effie Kenaston; sons, Harvey Augustus, Charles William, Walton Adalaska, Sanford Haines, James Scanland, Frank Edward, Robert Logan, Harry Weston, Hampton Ray and Roy Edward Kenaston.
