Caroline Foster Cowman was born near Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio, November 25, 1817, having reached the good old age of 90 years, 7 months and 19 days. With the exception of a few years after her marriage, her entire life was spent at her birthplace on the same farm on which she resided at the time of her death. It is not necessary to enlarge upon the many womanly and Christian qualities of this good woman, whose daily life and walk among us was "rich in all that is noble, good, lovable and true." She has gone in and out among the people of this community for so many years. "To know her was to love her." Her life itself is its own eulogy. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Foster, being the eldest of a family of nine children. An aged sister, Mrs. Cynthia Walker, the youngest of her father's family survive her. She was united in marriage to John F. Cowman, April 18, 1838. To this union were born eleven children, several of whom have passed to their heavenly home. She was bereft of her husband by the hand of death January 26, 1869. Four children are left to mourn the loss of a loved mother; William C., Samuel W., Mrs. Edna McCreight and Esther, who was her constant companion in the home and ministered so tenderly to her in her declining years. She leaves two grandchildren, Mary E. Cowman and Charles E. McCreight, and a host of friends, far and wide, who sorrow with them. In early life she gave her heart to God and united with the Methodist Church, giving her helpful, loyal service. After her marriage she removed her membership with her husband to the Rocky Spring Presbyterian Church and was a regular attendant at the services, her husband being a deacon in the church. Later in life she transferred her membership to the Methodist Church at Dunn's Chapel, near her home and was identified with it throughout the rest of her life. Her energy, her ability, her happy, cheerful disposition, her great ambition made her friends innumerable. She was always ready to give a kind word and a helping hand to those in need. She was never known to complain of her lot in life, always looking on the bright side of life, trying to make others happy. Her presence in the home with a sweet benediction and a holy remembrance, and the consolation remains to the bereaved that nothing was left undone by them in lovingly and willingly caring for her all these years. Until unconsciousness overtook her the last few days of her life, she welcomed her many friends with a warm hand clasp and a sweet smile that reflected the divine love which filled her soul. Loving hands of children, friends and neighbors were ever ready and willing to do what they could, but human skill could prevail nothing. God called and the tender thread of live was severed and her spirit soared majestically and peacefully to its Maker to dwell in that house not made with hands eternal in the heavens. How she will be missed in the home, for the home ties are now severed. Her chair is vacant, her accustomed place will know her no more, yet the sweet memory is ever dear and the influence of her life will never be forgotten. A few more days, perchance, a few years, and we too, shall cross the mystic river of death. No doubt she will be at the beautiful gate, waiting and watching to welcome us home where "God shall wipe away all tears from the eyes and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow' nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain." How quiet and peaceful her last hour, not dying, just closing her eyes to earthly scenes to open them in heaven. By a touch of the Master's hand "The gates that stood ajar" were open wider still, and the dear one entered into eternal rest. And as the gates swing open we hear the welcome song: Oh, race well run, Oh, work well done! I will give thee rest. For the feet so oft grown weary, These earthly mountains trod, Will never more falter or grow weary, On the eternal hill of God. The funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon, July 16, at her last residence, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Frenger, of Lynchburg. She was laid to rest in the Hillsboro Cemetery.
