Description	:	Frederick and Caroline (Kroh) Becher came from Berelburg, Westfalen, Germany in 1876 to Flannigan, Illinois with their young children. They were there about 12 years, then they moved to Kansas where they stayed for one year. Frederick Becher Jr. came here from Illinois and took up a homestead claim in what later became known as the Blue Grass area. He worked on the railroad in addition to homesteading. On December 30, 1887 he had taken his gun along on the hand car to hunt rabbits, and it is believed the gun accidently discharged striking him in the stomach. He was buried in... Read More	Frederick and Caroline (Kroh) Becher came from Berelburg, Westfalen, Germany in 1876 to Flannigan, Illinois with their young children. They were there about 12 years, then they moved to Kansas where they stayed for one year. Frederick Becher Jr. came here from Illinois and took up a homestead claim in what later became known as the Blue Grass area. He worked on the railroad in addition to homesteading. On December 30, 1887 he had taken his gun along on the hand car to hunt rabbits, and it is believed the gun accidently discharged striking him in the stomach. He was buried in Sims Cemetery. The next spring his parents and brothers came here to take over his homestead. One daughter, Lisseta, remained in Kansas and married John Blum. They later moved to George, Iowa. Frederick and Caroline's children who came here were Frederick Jr., William, Henry and Christian. When Frederick Jr.'s family came here they wanted to see him once more and to have him moved to New Salem for permanent burial. So the body was exhumed. It had been winter when he died, so the body had evidently frozen immediately and was yet perfectly preserved when they opened the coffin the next spring with the exception of a little mold about the eyes, which his mother wiped away with her handkerchief. The Becher's nearest neighbors were George and Louisa (Bickel) Winckler. For many summers Indians would come regularly to hunt. Their camp was at a creek less than a quarter mile from the home. Frederick and Caroline Becher made their home with their son Henry, until their deaths.
