On Feb. 27th (1917), as the midnight strokes resounded through the house, the soul of Caroline Murphy returned to God who gave it. Slowly fading for seven weeks, restless, but without pain, tenderly cared for by the loving ministrations of the faithful wife of her only son, sweetly she fell asleep. Child of the soil of New Ross, living here all her long life as loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, hospitable, ever-ready at the call of sickness and death, no matter the weather or the need, until feeble nature made it impossible. Had she lived until April 5th she would have attained her ninety-second birthday. She was one of the three nonogenerians who were on the grounds at Rosebank the day of the centennial celebration of New Ross. She was the daughter of Samuel Walker, a young ex-soldier, and Elizabeth (Popner), his wife, who was born on the troopship leaving Portsmouth, England, for Canada. The grand-daughter of Sergeant Jacob Popner, the wife of William Murphy, who died February 12th, 1915, grandson of another of the veterans, who landed in command of Captain Wm. Ross, on that memorable August, 1816. She leaves one son, John Sylvester Murphy, mail courier, an enterprising public and highly respected citizen, and one daughter, Mary M., wife of Edmund M. Boylan, merchant, New Ross; seventeen grandchildren, one of whom is now in Harve, France, Captain Vincent P. Murphy, who left our shores as Lieutenant of the 25th Battalion, and was promoted on the field after the battle of Courcelette; also, she had five great grandchildren. The obsequies took place from her son's house, Feb. 29th followed by a large concourse, and she was laid beside her husband, in Charing Cross cemetery. The casket was covered with flowers among which was a wreath from son and wife, beautiful cross from daughter and husband, and a handsome handpiece from Ada Russell, the granddaughter of her twin sister. The pall-bearers were all sons of her nearest old neighbors, viz: Edward Russell, William deAdder, F. LeRoy Russell, and George Harris.
