At Rockford, in this county, on Tuesday January 9th, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. J. Williams died within twelve hours of each other. At 6 o'clock a.m. Mrs. Winnie Williams passed away---and at 6 p.m. on the same day, her husband Thos. J. Williams, breathed his last. The age of the former was 68 years, while the latter was 73. The two were ill only a few days. The death of Mrs. Williams was quite strange. On January 3rd she fell asleep, and never woke until the following Sunday, after which she was unconsciousness until death relieved her of her sufferings. Mr. and Mrs. Williams lived a long, happy and useful life together. Mr. Williams was the first sheriff of Surry county after its division in 1852. He filled the office four years, being elected in the years 1854 and 1856. He was a good citizen and made a splendid officer, and died without an enemy. Mr. and Mrs. Williams were buried at Rockford at 1 o'clock Wednesday in separate coffins, but in one grave. (submitted by Martie Groome-McGirt)
