Friends may call at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 25, 2019, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Slater Cemetery. A long-time resident of Slater, Caroll was born on Feb. 7, 1925, in Nevada, Iowa to Oscar and Sylvia (Ritland) Sesker. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to a farm near Ostrander and Spring Valley, Minn., where he graduated from high school. After moving back to Cambridge at the age of 19, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. The Battle of the Bulge had started and one day before his 20th birthday, he boarded the Queen Elizabeth headed to Europe. His 20th birthday was spent in Scotland, England and France. Upon returning from the Army, he met the love of his life, Joann Lilland, and they were married on July 25, 1948, at the Little Brown Church. They had three daughters, Carolyn, Connie and Cathy. They also raised two nieces, JoEllen and Karla Sesker. Caroll's early working days were with the City of Slater, where he held down every job they had, which in those days ranged all the way from maintenance to town sheriff. He worked at the Woodward State Hospital for 10 years before going to work at the Story County Courthouse in Nevada as maintenance supervisor until his "retirement." Not being a man to be idle and relax, doing nothing, he held many jobs after retirement, including, demolition of buildings with Randy Kennedy, driving the Ballard Baseball team, and working for Garst, driving trucks during harvest and planting seasons. He and Joann enjoyed going to Texas every winter during retirement with their good friends, Phyllis and Jerry Newman. Caroll was a 70-year member of the Slater American Legion. Caroll received the Bronze medal of honor and this past Memorial Day, was presented with a Quilt of Valor. He enjoyed going to watch Iowa State Women's basketball and held season tickets for many years until this past year. Living to the wonderful long age of 94, Caroll was preceded in death by most of his family and friends, most especially his beloved wife, Joann. He is survived by his daughters, Carolyn Sesker, of Ames, Connie Sesker, of Boone, and Cathy (Steve) Lewis, of Polk City; his niece, who he raised as a daughter, JoEllen Brown; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Luke) Weigel, Aaron Sesker, Carrie Sesker and Mason (Aubrey) Lewis; his great-grandchildren, Meagan, Lane and Christopher Weigel; and two great-great-grandchildren, Carter and Emma Joann. Caroll is also survived by his brother-in-law, David (Barb) Lilland; and several other nieces, cousins and lifelong friends, Doug and Brenda Houser and Julie Ingersoll. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family, American Legion Post 260, or the Slater Area Historical Association (S.A.H.A.), where he and Joann were founding members.
