She died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, at Avera Eureka Community Hospital. Carolyn Ann Berreth, daughter of Albert and Ottelia (Ottmar) Berreth was born Oct. 30, 1945, at Eureka, S.D. This is where she grew up, graduating with the Class of 1963 from Eureka High School. She then attended Northern State College and also spent two years at Fairview School of X-Ray Technology in Minneapolis, graduating in 1966. She then returned to Eureka. She was united in marriage to Gary Oster on June 18, 1966, in St. Paul's United Church of Christ at Eureka. Her husband was in the U.S. Air Force and they lived in Texas and Michigan. While he was in Vietnam, she returned to Eureka and worked at the Bowdle Hospital. In 1970, they started farming near Eureka. In 1975, they moved to the Oster family homestead. Carolyn chose to stay home and raise her children and make a good home for her family. She later worked part-time at the Eureka Public School and Eureka Chiropractic Clinic. She and her husband continued to make their home on the farm. Carolyn inspired and encouraged many people during her lifetime, particularly during her three-year battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her. Carolyn enjoyed gardening and planting flowers, playing the piano, listening to gospel music, reading and staying in touch with her many friends by calling or e-mailing them. She treasured her family and spent as much time with them as possible. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and a past church council member, Sunday school superintendent, teacher and member of the worship committee. She was also a member of the Eureka Community Foundation Board, Eureka Health Care Center Advisory Board, Eureka Study Club, American Legion Auxiliary and McPherson County Cancer Support Group. Survivors include her husband of Eureka; her mother of Eureka; two sons, Nathan (Julie) Oster of Jordan, Minn., and Stuart (Erin) Oster of Andover, Minn.; one brother, Jim (Kathryn) Berreth of Brookings, S.D.; one sister-in-law, Donna Berreth of Atlanta, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Chase and Jonah. Her father, one brother, Don on May 5, 1993, and one granddaughter, Emma on Nov. 27, 2003, preceded her in death. Casketbearers will be Bonnie and Tim Serr, Sharon and Keith Kunz, Kathy and Don Gab and Jerry Dais. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
