She then went to Elgin Air Force Base in Florida, where she worked in the head office secretarial pool. She was honorably discharged in 1956. Carolyn was united in marriage to Benjamin R. Wagner on March 6, 1956 at Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The newlyweds moved to Canton, Ohio where Ben worked as a plumber. There Carolyn gave birth to a baby boy, Ben Jr. They then moved to their home southeast of Shelby, Nebraska. There the family grew by two more, daughters Elaine and LaRee. In 1964 they purchased the Shelby Planing Mill, which they operated for the next 28 years. Carolyn worked at Shelby Public Schools for 18 years as head cook. In 1991, they moved to San Diego and became managers of a senior apartment building for 8 years until retiring in 2000 and moving back to Shelby. They lived in Shelby until Ben's passing in 2007 and until Carolyn moved to Rising City in 2013 to be closer to her daughter until her passing. Carolyn loved gardening, canning, making sun pickles, baking, sewing, crocheting and making baby blankets for her great-grandchildren. She was a avid reader and gave piano and organ lessons. One of her great joys was the art of dance, and she and Ben were quite talented. They gave lessons through Platte Community College in 3 forms of dance: square, classical and ballroom. Carolyn attended the United Methodist Church in Shelby, where she was an organist and choir member for many years. She was a Sunday School superintendent and taught Bible school for 12 years. She was a member of the American Legion Post 296 and Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ben, brothers Donald and wife Kathryn, Andy, Fritz and wife Janet, and Lee Wayne Engel; sisters Elaine, Baby and Fern Engel Egger, and one great-granddaughter Alexandra Reed.
