Henry and Carrie's mother, Emma, were married in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, in 1867, and a year later, 1868, their first child was born, Walter Wallace Rhodes, in Pope Valley, Napa County, California, according to the Rhodes family bible. Henry and Carrie's mother, Emma, were married in San Jose, Santa Clara County, California, in 1867, and a year later, 1868, their first child was born, Walter Wallace Rhodes, in Pope Valley, Napa County, California, according to the Rhodes family bible. It is highly doubtful that Carrie's parents were living in Pope Valley at that early date, so there may be an error in the bible. He was more probably born in San Jose. (The year 1881 is the first time that her family was definitely in Pope Valley, for in that year Henry was reported to be working in Aetna Mine, a quicksilver mine near Pope Valley, perhaps already under the general management of Henry's brother, Morris Granville Rhodes.) In 1873 her sister, Agnes, was born in San Jose. In 1879 the last of her siblings was born, Arthur Avery. In the following year, 1880, Henry Rhodes and family were living in Nye County, Nevada Territory, as reported in the U. S. Census for that year. For some unknown reason, the entire family is listed, except for Carrie. Carrie was frequently very ill, as will be made clear below, so she may have been in some facility or with a relative at the time. In 1890 Carrie married Samuel Peter Barnett, son of Jesse and Lorana Clark Barnett of Pope Valley. They were married in the offices of Carrie's uncle, Morris Granville Rhodes, the General Superintendent of the Aetna Quicksilver Mine in Pope Valley. In 1893 Carrie's family left Napa County. Her mother and one brother, Arthur Avery, moved to Washington State, and her father probably went with them for at least a short time. Her family then moved to the Pt. Alberni, British Columbia area, where the descendants of the Rhodes family currently reside. Her mother apparently returned to California, as she died in Morgan Hill, Santa Clara Co, CA. Her father probably died in Washington state. Carrie and Sam had four children; the three who lived, all born in the Pope Valley area, were: Emma Lorana, 1891, Eric, 1894 and Cedric, 1896. Carrie died in Morgan Hill, Santa Clara Co, CA, while visiting her daughter, Agnes Rhodes Mast. Her ashes were buried in the Pope Valley Cemetery in the Barnett plot.
