Description	:	Carolyn Ruth Crego, age 87, entered her heavenly home on February 19, at 4:15 pm. Born in Newark, Ohio on October 3, 1933 she was the daughter of Cecil Smith and Ruth (George) Crego. Read More	Carolyn Ruth Crego, age 87, entered her heavenly home on February 19, at 4:15 pm. Born in Newark, Ohio on October 3, 1933 she was the daughter of Cecil Smith and Ruth (George) Crego. She was the 4th of seven children, whom her mother often referred to as her “seven blessings.” Carolyn became a Christian at age 12 at the Pine Street Christian Union Church and was baptized four years later. In 1951, during a summer campfire service, she surrendered her life to full-time service for the Lord. She graduated from Newark High School in 1951 and earned a BAB at Fort Wayne Bible College, Indiana in 1956. She had a major role in establishing the Fort Wayne First Christian Union Church. She canvassed the area, taught Sunday School, and became a charter member. She also had a vital role in the founding of the Heath Christian Union Church. In 1958, she volunteered to teach in the Vacation Bible Schools at the New England Fellowship of Evangelicals. She spent the entire summer there teaching and directing, and enjoyed it so much that by fall she decided to remain with the organization as a rural Bible teacher. For the next three years she continued this work which consisted of a 700-mile two-week circuit of rural schools in Central Maine. She stayed in a different home each night and was paid $10 a week plus car expenses. During the summer holidays she worked in the Fellowship’s camps. From January 1963 to June 1965, she directed the Christian Education program of the Christian Union Church in Dayton OH. Carolyn moved to Boston MA in August 1965 where she joined the staff at Children’s Haven, Inc. (aka Chilaven). There she shared in the work of weekly classes, the radio program and summer camping program. While living in Boston, she became a member of the South End Neighborhood Church of Emmanuel. After completing 25 years of missionary work, she was employed at Digital Equipment Corporation in Boston for 12-1/2 years; afterwards she enrolled at Burdett Business School in Boston graduating in 1994 with a Medical Coding Academic Excellence Award with the highest GPA in her class. Carolyn then retired and returned to her hometown where she continued to minister in her local church. Carolyn had a multitude of interests. These included her love of music, singing, hiking, camping, traveling and in 1985, running the Boston Marathon. She was very patriotic and enjoyed the outdoors and all its beauty. She loved to teach, organizing Bible studies whenever she could, wherever she could. She was a bit mechanically inclined and learned how to fix and repair all kinds of gadgets and devices during her tenure as a missionary. Photography was another passion of hers. She took many photos during her travels far and wide. After returning home she became interested in researching family genealogy and joined the Licking County Genealogical Society. She enjoyed a very special adventure going zip-lining at The Wilds below Zanesville, Ohio; and being in her early 80s that was quite an accomplishment. She was able also to attend a Chilaven reunion in 2012 which was truly a highlight in her life and she literally glowed for months afterwards. Having a keen sense of humor and being quick-witted, she was very good at puns, which were coined as “Carolynisms.” Carolyn had a beautiful Christian spirit. Although she appeared to be rather quiet and soft-spoken, she never shied away from an opportunity to share her faith in the Lord. She has had a far reaching and long lasting influence on countless others throughout her life, family and friends alike. Many of the students she taught at Chilaven have grown up with families of their own, but have continued to stay in touch through the years expressing their love and appreciation for that very special teacher who had such an impact on their lives when they were young. Survived by sisters Phyllis Courtright and Constance Brown; brother Gary Crego; many nieces and nephews; others left behind: special friend for over 60 years, Nancy Cowles; and Irina Goldina, whom she sponsored, along with her son, as immigrants from Riga, Latvia, Russia to the United States in 1988. Preceded in death by parents Cecil & Ruth Crego; sisters Virginia (Robert) Walsh, Wanda (Eugene) Stewart; brother Neil Frances (Lucille) Crego. Graveside service will be Thursday, February 25, 1:30 pm at Newark Memorial Gardens, 4244 Marion Rd., Newark Ohio. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in Carolyn’s honor accepted and appreciated by the Heath Christian Union Church, 80 Licking View Dr., Heath OH 43056.
