Description	:	Carrie Breske was born Feb. 16, 1923 in Kleppe, Norway, the daughter of Gilbert and Olga (Hagen) Friestad. The family lived on a farm in Norway but didn’t have enough land to support a family so her dad left Norway and came to Valley City, ND. Five years later, he returned to Norway and brought Carrie, her mom, and her brother back with him. Read More	Carrie Breske was born Feb. 16, 1923 in Kleppe, Norway, the daughter of Gilbert and Olga (Hagen) Friestad. The family lived on a farm in Norway but didn’t have enough land to support a family so her dad left Norway and came to Valley City, ND. Five years later, he returned to Norway and brought Carrie, her mom, and her brother back with him. They lived on the Ben Northridge farm for a year and then on Dr. Van Houten’s dairy farm before purchasing a farm of their own in Noltimier Township. Carrie didn’t speak English but her 1st grade teacher, Miss Finley helped her learn. As the family grew Carrie, being one of the elder children helped milk cows, tend horses, and do a variety of chores. The new farm didn’t have electricity or running water until her dad could save enough to buy an electric power plant and batteries. In 1932 Carrie and her parents became US citizens, an experience she never forgot. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1936 and finished high school at Noltimier School before attending Fargo Business College. In 1941 she married Herman Breske. They farmed near Valley City and raised five children. After retiring from farming they moved to Valley City. Herman died in 1978 and Carrie continued to make her home at Valley City, most recently as a resident of the Sheyenne Care Center. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the ladies circle, Noltimier Homemakers Club, and the VC Eagles Auxiliary. Carrie is survived by three sons and a daughter: Gary, Bjarne, Francis and Wayne; two sisters Fran Aune and Marit Zaun, and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter Marjorie Bullock, two sisters Hazel Swan and Irene Shanenko; a brother Odd Friestad; two great grandsons Nickolas and Andrew Sadek.
