Description	:	Carrie Helen (Schuldt) Symes passed away peacefully July 2, 2020 at Avera Brady in Mitchell, South Dakota. Carrie was born April 29, 1929 to Ferdinand and Clara (Meves) Schuldt on their family farm northwest of Hartford, South Dakota. She was baptized September 29, 1929 at Christ Lutheran Church where she attended Sunday school and church during her childhood. Carrie was born April 29, 1929 to Ferdinand and Clara (Meves) Schuldt on their family farm northwest of Hartford, South Dakota. She was baptized September 29, 1929 at Christ Lutheran Church where she attended Sunday school and church during her childhood. Along with helping on the farm, Carrie attended McLeod Grade School and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1947. Later that year, Carrie married her sweetheart, Eugene E. Symes, on June 29th. They raised three children – Gloria, James, and Douglas – in the Sioux Falls home that Carrie’s father, Eugene, and his brothers and father built. Along with being a stay-at-home mother, Carrie worked at Manchester Biscuit Company and Fanny’s Ice Cream Shop. For fourteen years she worked at Mom and Dad’s Nursing Home, a place where all three of her children would work as teenagers. Over the years, Carrie worked for several restaurants and cleaned houses for nearly twenty different families. Eugene and Carrie enjoyed traveling. They traveled all over the United States and were able to visit Europe together. Carrie went to Europe a second time several years later. On both trips, she visited the home her father grew up in. Eugene and Carrie also enjoyed square dancing, ballroom dancing, playing checkers, and volunteering. Eugene passed away on July 6, 1991. Carrie enjoyed entertaining family and friends and stayed busy with all kinds of handwork. Knitting, embroidery, crocheting, needle work, and making scrapbooks were some of her favorite pastimes. She also loved baking and was known for her delicious brownies. Since 1948, Carrie was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and St. John’s Circle, was a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge, participated in Active Generations, and spent 32 years volunteering at Sioux Valley Sanford Hospital. She was a member of United Commercial Travelers of America, the Rebecca Lodge Club, and two card clubs. Carrie was also a Girl Scout leader. Carrie had a kind heart and will be missed by her children, Gloria (Merlyn) Tieszen, James (Marla) Symes, and Douglas (Cindy) Symes; her grandchildren, Bryan (Alona) Tieszen, Kimberly (Christopher) Reynolds, Shierra Symes, Amanda (Omar) Symes, Greg Symes, and Patrick Symes; her great-grandchildren, Michael and Joshua Reynolds, and Aaden and Aryana Tieszen; her sister-in-law Elaine Symes; and many nieces and nephews. Carrie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Eugene; her sister Adeline (Munce) Donaldson; brothers-in-law George Symes, Marvin Symes, Charles Symes, Russel Munce, and Clarence Donaldson; sisters-in-law, Mary Jane Symes, Clarice Ziegler, and Susie Symes; her nephew’s Steve Ziegler and Larry Munce and his wife Kay; and her niece Cheryl Symes. Funeral services will be at St. John Lutheran Church of Sioux Falls, followed by lunch, and burial at Hartford Community Cemetery.
